Paces on 1820 Census

I recently completed a study of the Paces on the 1820 Federal Census Indexes
and compared the information to my database of Paces in America. This was
done to examine the demographics of Paces in America during this period and
to determine how many Pace families in 1820 have unknown ancestries.

There were 118 Pace families in the 1820 census. I was able to determine that
92 of these families have known ancestries, which leaves 26 with unknown
ancestries.
The table below lists the Pace families by state and lists whether they were
descendants of Richard Pace of Jamestown (R) , John Pace of Middlesex (M),
the German Pees/Pace line (G) or were of unknown origin (U).
(I am not sure if this table will come across aligned, if not I will try
something else.)

This table indicates that the descendants of Richard Pace of Jamestown
generally began their western and southern migration fairly early as only two
families remain in VA. They primarily migrated to North Carolina, Tennessee
and Georgia. On the other hand the descendants of John Pace of Middlesex VA
mostly remained in the state for a long time, except for a large migration to
Kentucky. The German Paces originally settled in NJ and by 1820 were mostly
in Luzerne Co, PA, while some had begun a migration to Perry Co, Ohio.

Following are the Pace families in the 1820 census whose ancestry is unknown
(to me).

AL– Cherokee Nation – Jediah Pace
GA– Irwin Co. – Monticello Twp – Thomas Pace p 200
(this may be the Thomas Pace b. abt 1795 who m. Charolotte Coleman.)
GA – Irwin Co. – Monticello Twp - Stephen Pace p 186
GA– Morgan Co. – William p 322
(The other 2 Pace families in Morgan Co. were Barnabas and his son Barnabas –
how is William related to them?)
GA– Telfair Co. – Christopher Pace

GA– Warren Co. – William Pace p 281
(the other Pace family in Warren Co is Silas Pace b. abt 1770)
GA– Effingham Co. – Prior Pace p 81
GA– Richmond Co. – Thomas Pace p. 221
IL– Franklin Co. – Joel Pace p 64 (from State census)
IL– Jefferson Co. – Spencer Pace p 74 Casey Prairie Twp
KY– Cumberland Co. – John Pace p 142
KY– Woodford Co. – Joel Pace p 108
MD– Queen Anne Co. – John P. Pace p 42
MA– Essex Co. – David Pace p 647 Andover
MS– Warren Co. – James Pace p 118
MS– Warren Co. – Royal Pace p 118 (details of this census suggest that Royal
was the father of James)
NY– Ontario Co. – Cyrus Pace p 249 MiloTwp
NC– Halifax Co. – Izra Pace p 160
NC– Buncombe Co. – Moses Pace p 90
(On the same page is Jonathan Pace whose ancestry is known)
OH– Hamilton Co. – Henry Pace p 132 Cincinatti Dist 4
AR– Crawford Co. – Timothy Pace (on Tax List)
VA– Fluvanna Co. – Nancy Pace p 66 (Barnardsberg)
(she is probably related to the other Pace family in Barnardsburg, Tarlton
Pace)
VA– Ohio Co. – Patten Pace p 23

I am hoping that some members of the Pace list will recognize some of these
Paces, which may help to connect their descendants to their earlier ancestry.

With a further examination of my database of descendants of the Colonial
Virginia Paces , I was able to determine that there were at least 38 Pace
families where the male Pace head of household was still living and yet the
families were not found on the 1820 census. Since 85 descendant families of
Virginia Paces were on the census this means that about 30% of the total
families were missed. Some of these missing records could be attributed to
unreadable census images or errors in spelling of the surname (I did not
check for spelling variations), but it illustrates how incomplete the early
census records were.
