Subject: [PACE] Frederick Pace of Chesterfield Co, SC - 1800 census
Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007 10:44:20 -0600
One of the many mysteries surrounding the Clarke Co, AL, Paces (or Frederick of Wales Paces) is the Frederick Pace who was in Chesterfield Co, SC, during the 1800 census, along with William, John, and Dempsey Pace. Gordon W. Pace has referred to this Frederick Pace in several posts. Many believe that John, Dempsey, and William are the same Paces who later settled in Washington Co, Miss. Terr. or Clarke Co, AL (Clarke Co was formed from Washington Co).
Because of their presence in the same county in 1800, one might suspect that these four Paces belong to the same family group. This relationship is supported by other evidence (J.M. Pace biography) in the case of William, John, and Dempsey. In this biography, Frederick Pace is listed as the father of the three, but there is no mention of a Frederick as a fourth sibling. In the 1800 census, Frederick is in the same age category as William and John (26-45), so it is highly unlikely that he is Frederick the father, given what we think we know about the ages of William and John.
So, who was this Frederick Pace in the 1800 Chesterfield census? Did he in fact move to Mississippi Territory? Is he the same one that Sammy Pace found in the 1817 tax list of Greene Co, MS? From memory without checking the book, I recall that Bruce Howard speculates that Frederick Pace did move to Miss. Terr., died there, and the Jenny Pace in the 1808 Wash. Co census is his widow. Comparing family structure and ages between the two censuses (1800 Chesterfield vs. 1808 Wash. Co) this is possible, but one has to assume the death of Frederick and one younger daughter along with the marriage or other disappearance of the oldest daughter. Do we have any evidence of a Frederick Pace in MS or AL prior to the one in 1817 in Greene Co? Or, does he reappear in any other place after the 1800 Chesterfield census?
