I was in the M.A. Pace store just yesterday visiting with Robert Pace.
These Paces (3b dna group) descend from Burrell (Pope) Pace and Lydia
Woodruff through son Cornelius Pace. The land was built on the land that
Cornelius Pace once owned. It used to be called Pace's Gap. M.A. Pace was
my 4th great uncle. Saluda is a quaint little town close to Hendersonville,
NC and Greenville/Spartanburg SC. Tourism is their major industry. I have
heard the Pace Society of America may possibly be meeting in this area again
next year in 2009.

Subject: [PACE] M. A. Pace Store -- Salurda NC
On Thursday, June 5th, 2008, I saw a PBS program called "Our State" on
www.unctv.com. It is a weekly program from NC PBS that I can pick up in
my Virginia area. I think it may have been a re-run.
One of 3 segments within the half-hour program featured a little mountain
town in NC named Saluda (Henderson Co.):
M. A. Pace Store, circa 1910: This building is the most intact
structure, both inside and out, in the historic district. The shelving
and most of the furnishings are original. The M. A. Pace business has
been in this location and operated by the same family since the
building's construction. The second floor has been variously a doctor's
office, a meeting hall for the Woodmen of the World, a beauty parlor, and
later a storage area. (The program took you o a brief tour of this
general store, operated today by a descendant--Robert Pace.) It was my
impression that the town had originally had another name.
Episode 402
Thursday, June 5, at 8 PM
Hope Plantation-explore Bertie County's finest historic home.
An Artist's Reflections-visit Boone artist Noyes Capehart, a writer,
teacher and painter who creates visual short stories embodying all of his
experiences.
Saluda-D.G. Martin takes a tour of this mountain town, settled in 1878.
Tar Heel Towns: Saluda
The little mountain town of Saluda grew up with the railroad, when
Southern Railway established a crew base there at the crest of the
steepest rail grade in the country. D.G. Martin takes us on a tour to
meet Bob Pace, a life-long resident, and relative newcomers Kathy
Thompson, and Larry and Debra Jackson, who have adopted this village
where in many ways life has seemed to stand still.
If I were a descendant of M. A. Pace, I think I would try to get a copy
of the Our State magazine and also perhaps a tape of the PBS program. I
think the town of Saluda has a web site with a walking tour and part of
this e-mail is stolen from that web site.
