Kathlynn and others interested in the answer to Kathlynn's question,
For surname group projects, it is necessary to have a male family member of the surname of interest be the participant. This could be a brother, father, uncle, cousin, etc. For some of my surnames, I have distant relatives that are representing my lines. The DNA being tested for the surname projects is the y-chromosome DNA that is passed from fathers to sons, just as the surname is usually passed.
It is possible to test the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) which mothers pass to their children - both sons and daughters, but only the daughters pass it on to their children. So, for instance, if you decided to test your mtDNA it would be for the bottom line of your pedigree - your mother's mother's mother, etc., line of ancestors with no breaks in the line through a male ancestor. This is much more difficult to use in a genealogical sense as the surnames change each generation BUT it has and is being used for genealogical purposes. It has been used to prove family relationships - it is just much more difficult as you can't set up a surname project to do so and finding the right participant through the direct female descent of the ancestress of interest is often more difficult to do. I also know the mtDNA of several of my lines of female ancestors. The Sorensen Molecular Genealogical Foundation (SMGF) at www.smgf.org has a database of
mtDNA results where you can search on your female surname lines for the mtDNA results although it does take some effort to determine the actual results.
Both types of DNA tests are offered by FamilyTreeDNA. Several of the specials this month include a mtDNA test as part of the package with the y-chromosome test. The discounted prices are for tests ordered through an established group at FTDNA.

Hi Rebecca, I have entertained the idea of getting mine done for a long time
now. Is this offer only available to men with Pace surname? Or is it
available for females with different surnames? Or I guess a better question
is
do they do female testing for other surnames? Thanks for your help....what
would we do without people like you and Roy [and others like you].....we all
certainly continue to be beneficiaries of your hard work/expert
knowledge/expert
abilities/generous sharing].

Due to the overwhelming response to Family Tree DNA's August special, they
have extended the reduced prices on new DNA kits until the end of September.
So there is still time to order a DNA kit at the lower price.
