Subject: [PACENTRE] Question
Date: Tue, 3 Feb 2004 07:29:04 -0600
Is there a way to determine the specific location of a census entry, beyond county and township? I have reason to speculate that one of the families in my data base may have moved to another families location between the 1870 census and the 1880. The county and townships mentioned suggest this move, but is there anyway I could confirm it?
I have included details below if anyone cares to try and figure it out.
Thank you all for your continued help.
Charlene
1860 Union Cty, PA, Hartley Twp.
MOYER, W. H. age 32, laborer, born in PA, (as everyone is in this family) Martha, 31, Mary 19, Christiann 17, May, 15,(attended school within the year as did Rachel and Eva) Rachel 10 (it looks like III), Eve 13, Barbara Wikely 3, Dan Moyer 14. Moyer is written after each name and it looks like an MOYER to me.
1870 Census of Union County PA, Hartley Twp.
Moyer, William H., 48 years old, white, male, day laborer, born in PA, Margaret J, 57, female, white, keeping house, born in PA, Ellen 23, female, white, at home, born in PA (as are all the "children" so I will not continue to repeat it) Rachel, age 17, at home, Adaline, age 16, at home, Daniel, age 22, at home. Adeline and Margaret J. cannot write, William and Daniel are marked as male citizens 22 years of age and upward.
1870 Centre County PA, Haines Twp. Spring Mill (This town is west of Mifflinburg on the same road so it is highly possible these are the same Barbara's. But who are the Shaulters?!)
Henry SHALTER, age 32, male, white, farmer, value of personal estate $600, born in PA, Sarah 27, keeping house, value of l real-estate $1000, Ellen, age 6, born in PA as all the children are, Serilla, 4, Charity, 2, Caroline 6/12, month of birth - May? It has to be Aug. of 1870 or before but I'm not sure, it looks like Nov.!, WIKEL, BARBARA, age 13, female, white, born in PA, Martin, Polly age 67, white female, born in PA, cannot write.
1880 Census of Union Cty PA, Hartley Twp.
Henry SHALTER, age 42, married, white, male, born in PA, parents born in PA, head of household, Sarah, married white female, wife of Henry, born in PA, parents, born in PA, Ellen, age 15, daughter of Henry, single, white female, born in PA, parents born in PA, Chestia, daughter, age 13 (everything is the same for the rest of the children so I won't repeat it each time) Caroline, age 11, Sarah age 9, John, age 7, Henry, age 5, Thomas, age 3, Samuel, age 1.
By the 1880 census William and Martha Moyer are in MO, along with their granddaughter Barbara Wiekle, who has married Frederick Hickman and has three children.
I don't know what connection the Shalters are to the Moyers. But since the both the Moyers and the Shalters house Barbara, I am guessing there is some connection (Barbara may have been a servant in the Shalters home, and not a relative). Then when the Moyers move to MO between 1870 and 1880 and the Shalters have moved to Union County, Hartley Twp. (the same county and township the Moyers moved from) I just wonder if the Shalters didn't move onto the Moyers place. Is there anyway to find out?
