The last line here is a quote I saw on someone's genealogy website. Does
anyone know of such a custom or impropriety or whatever of that period of
time?

A couple from Ireland started out at St. Mary's, PA. The couple ends up
moving away from the St. Mary's area to Fayette County, PA, then to Falls
Creek. Their family had four boys and only two girls when the mother dies
in 1887.

"AT THAT TIME IT WAS NOT CONSIDERED PROPER FOR A WIDOWED MAN TO RAISE HIS
DAUGHTERS."
