Several of my ancestors did not see active service, but did, what I believe
was called, patriotic duty. One donated hundreds of pounds of meat to the
army, another outfitted a ship (of course when he did this he went from
Ensign to Captain, so I wonder if it was entirely altruistic!). There were
many different ways to serve, and a hospital sounds like a fine one!!
