Sandra and Cathy,
It was Capt. Culin who was shot by a private in the local militia in 1776.
One source (Ashmead) just gives his last name; another, a newspaper article
sent to me last week, says his name was John. The only Capt. Culin I'm aware
of is Swan, whose estate was being settled in 1783. Culin and his cousin John
Crosby had just been sworn in as Captain and First Lieutenant when the
soldier shot and killed Culin. It happened at the White Horse Tavern just 3
blocks from my house. I mailed a letter on Thursday to Dr. Craig, and one of
the questions I ask him was who Capt. John Culin was. Perhaps the newspaper
reporter couldn't imagine any man's name being Swan and assumed it was John.
I'll try to remember to post if Dr. C is able to provide an answer to this
mystery Culin.
Crum Creek was in Chester County, not Philadelphia County. Annakey Culin was
one of the witnesses against poor old Margaret Mattson who was accused of
witchcraft in 1684. The trial took place in Philadelphia.
As for the variants in spelling, throughout the court record of the trial
several names are spelled differently - Matson/Mattson; Saundering/Sanderlin;
Vanculin/Coolin/Cooling
For those interested, "The Jury went forth, and upon their Returne Brought
her in Guilty of haveing the Comon fame of a Witch, but not Guilty in manner
and forme as Shee Stands Indicted."
