The NAVY IN THE CIVIL WAR & The 29th Emergency Reg't PA
by Bill Stroud
Bill will touch on what a Navy Quarter Master was, and what his duties
were. He plans a general overview of the Development of the US Navy
in the Civil War, along with overall strategy. The Charleston blockade,
The capture of New Orleans, Vicksburg, and Control of the Mississippi.
The part on the 29th will be about it's roll in defending the State
against Lee in July 1863, as well as a general view of the calling of the
Militia by Gov. Curtin, and what went on.
Bill lived in Delaware Co. & now lives in Paoli, Chester Co., & gives
lectures on the following:
The 72nd PA inf.
The 69th PA
"The Philadelphia Brigade" (69th, 71st, 72nd, 106th PA)
The 29th PA vet Vol. Inf. (3 years)
The 6th PA Cav. (Rush's Lancers)
The 2nd PA Heavy Arty
The 83rd PA Vet Vols
The 1st PA Reserves (30th PA Inf.)
The 124th PA
The 203rd PA
The U.S. Navy, Battle of Hampton Rds, and blockade ops around
Charleston SC.
Bill Stroud is currently the Operations Director at The Wagner Free
Institute of Science in Philadelphia. He oversees the maintenance
and daily use of the Museum, as well as site manage for a restoration
project currently involving a wing of the Museum. He was Property
Manager at Old St. David's Episcopal Church in Wayne for 13 years. Bill
has been an amateur historian for most of his 43 years, with particular
interest in 19th Century American History. I have been pursuing the
study of the Civil War and PA's roll in it since 1994. Stroud hopes to
write a book about the Civil War Veterans who are buried at St. David's.
He became interested in genealogy while doing his research on them
and helping other people do research on their Civil War Veterans. Bill
also gives guided tours of the cemetery, as well.
The Wagner Free Institute of Science was built in the years during the
Civil War, and Camp Cadwalader a large staging and mustering area for
many Philadelphia regiments was in a nearby field, only a few blocks
away from the Wagner. Soldiers apparently found it a curiosity, and
would often stop by to see what was happening.
