Subject: [PACHESTE] For Historians: "servant man" ???
Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 23:02:04 -0400

10 Oct 1716 Gaien STEVENSON, yeoman, of Chester cnty, PA granted to William
HORNE and Robert PYLE, amongst other things, one servant man by the name of
Robert AYERS valued at £100 for the remainder of the term that Robert AYERS
had to serve.

My question is: would this "servant man" necessarily have been a bonded
servant such as bound for his passage money to the colonies or could it
also mean someone who had been apprenticed? How long is it likely the
remainder of his term was given its value of £100?

My Robert[1] EYRE was a neighbor of Robert PYLE and had a son, Robert[2]
EYRE, who might have been put to an apprenticeship. Robert[1] EYRE was dead
by 1716 and Robert[2] EYRE was a carpenter by 1726.
