Hi, Debbie:
It's an abbreviation for 'ditto' which means the same as the hash marks.
"do"

Subject: [PACHESTE] do?
My first question of the day:)
Looking at the censuses, I see the usual tic (") marks indicating people
have the same surname as the person above or born in the same state,
etc. But a lot of times I also see what appears to be "do" or even
"doj". At first I thought that they meant the same thing. But then I
see both " and do used on the same page by the same census taker. What
does this mean?
Thanks,
Debbie
