Ancestry does have the AIS indexes for some of these years. These are
indexes that they purchased and are not linked to the census images.

Take a look at

You can search the AIS census indexes here.
http://ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/ais/main.htm

And I use www.familysearch.com for the 1880 census index.

It's a help until Ancestry finishes their own indexes.
