Alice H. Adams, 93, of 511/2 Pearl Ave., died at 6:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb.
15, 2001, in Sugar Creek Station, Franklin RD 3.
Born Oct. 19, 1907, in Oil City, she was a daughter of Floyd D. and Myrtle
SILZLE HARRIGER.
Mrs. Adams was a graduate of Clarion College and did substitute teaching.
She was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of
Franklin and was a former member of the Oil City Community Alliance Church.
Mrs. Adams was married in 1927 to the Rev. George F. SICKENBERGER, who
died Nov. 4, 1970. She then was married Jan. 20, 1979, to Ronald B. Adams,
who died Nov. 22, 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. E.P. (Wilma) JACKSON of Carlisle and
Mrs. Robert (Elinore) DOBSON of Bluffton, S.C.; a stepson, Gerald Adams of
Salt Lake City, Utah; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three
great-great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and nine
step-great-grandchildren.
She also is survived by one brother, Eugene Harriger of Seneca; two half
brothers, Robert Harriger of Seneca and Clifford Harriger of Greenville;
and one sister, Lucille BOLAND of Oil City.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Mrs. Adams was preceded in death
by a son, Floyd Sickenberger; a brother, John Harriger; two stepbrothers;
and one stepsister.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Morrison Funeral
Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with
the Rev. Timothy Young, associate pastor of the Oil City Community Alliance
Church, officiating.
Interment will be in the Fertigs Cemetery.
THOMAS A CARNAHAN. (includes photo)
Thomas A. "Tom" Carnahan, 89, of Northpoint Drive, New Castle, a former
Clarion resident, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in New Castle.
Born Sept. 7, 1911, in Parkwood, he was a son of Thomas W. and Maude
Carnahan.
Mr. Carnahan was a 1928 graduate of Grove City High School where he
participated in track and served that year as the school's fullback on the
football team.
He then graduated in 1932 from Grove City College with a math and science
degree. While in college, he lettered three times in football and track.
Other college activities involved the Shakespeare Literacy Club, Science
Club, Athletic Club Council and Student Council.
Mr. Carnahan was a member of Delta Iota Kappa fraternity and the Phi Delta
Kappa honorary fraternity.
After college, he worked at Falls Creek High School where he taught math
and science and coached the football, basketball and softball teams. He
also was the supervising principal for grades 1 through 12.
Mr. Carnahan joined the military in 1944 during World War II. During that
time, he studied radar at Harvard University and MIT. He also served as a
personnel officer at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C.
In 1947, he came to Clarion University where he joined the math and
science departments. While teaching at Clarion, he coached many winning
golf and tennis teams in state competitions. He also was the assistant
coach for the basketball and football teams.
Mr. Carnahan was a member of Apscure, TROA, Masons F. & A.M., and AARP and
was a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association.
He was involved in many civic organizations including Clarion Kiwanis
Club, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Boy
Scouts and the Christian Men's Breakfast Club.
Mr. Carnahan was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Clarion
where he served as an elder, Sunday school teacher and superintendent of
youth groups.
His hobbies were golf, tennis, lawn work, reading, travel and bridge.
Surviving are his second wife, Eleanor KEENER Carnahan of New Castle; a son
and his wife, Thomas J. and Ellen Carnahan of DuBois; and three
grandchildren, Kelly Carnahan LINDSAY, Carrie Carnahan ALLEN and Elizabeth
LUNDKUIST.
He also is survived by a stepson, George F. Keener of Clarion; a
stepdaughter, Sara Jane Keener HUEY of New Wilmington; four
stepgrandchildren, Tammy Keener KISER, Amy Keener LUNDERER, Carrie Keener
and Nick Keener; and two step-great-grandchildren, Alexander Kiser and
Christopher Kiser.
Mr. Carnahan was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; and a
daughter, Barbara Carnahan.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Goble Funeral
Home of Clarion.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the First Presbyterian
Church in Clarion with Pastor Kirk Orr officiating.
Interment will follow in Beechwoods Cemetery, Falls Creek.
MICHAEL EUGENE RODGERS SR. (includes photo)
Michael Eugene Rodgers Sr., 57, of Franklin RD 5, died at 5:55 a.m.
Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at his residence.
Born Sept. 23, 1943, in Oil City, he was a son of Elmer E. and Helen KUSZ
Rodgers.
He was a 1962 graduate of Rocky Grove High School.
Mr. Rodgers was employed as a laborer at Franklin Steel and also worked as
a machinist at Oilwell Supply.
He was a member of St. Patrick Church, Franklin.
Mr. Rodgers enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and the outdoors, along
with woodworking, painting and drawing. He also enjoyed his dog, Crusher.
Surviving are three children, Michael E. Rodgers and his wife, Tammi S.,
and Barry Lee Rodgers, all of Franklin, and Lisa Ann Rodgers of Oil City;
and three grandchildren, Tiffany Ann HANEY, Merrisa Mae Haney and Robert W.
Haney III, all of Oil City.
He also is survived by one brother and his wife, Gary L. and Marilyn
Rodgers of Cochranton; three sisters, Mrs. Peter (Patricia E.) DISQUE and
Mrs. James (Mary H.) SOBROWSKI, both of Oil City, and Mrs. Thomas (Barbara
J.) DROTLEFF of Canfield, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts
and uncles.
Mr. Rodgers was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Robert W.
Gardinier Funeral Home, Franklin.
A Christian wake service will be held at 3 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St.
Patrick Church, Franklin, with Msgr. John J. Herbein, pastor, as the
presider.
Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Franklin.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice Program of the Visiting Nurses
Association of Venango County, 308 Seneca St., Oil City, 16301.
FLORENCE KIFER
Florence Kifer, 80, of Glendale, Ariz., formerly of Clarion, died Tuesday,
Feb. 13, 2001, in Peoria, Ariz.
Born March 10, 1920, she was a daughter of John V. and Erda CRAWFORD
PHILLIPS.
Mrs. Kifer was married in May 1937 to Herbert L. Kifer, who died May 23,
1982.
She and her late husband owned and operated Phillips Flowers in Clarion
until their retirement.
Mrs. Kifer was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in
Clarion.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Clarion.
Mrs. Kifer was an avid golfer.
Surviving are a son and his wife, James H. and Carol Kifer of Clarion; a
daughter, Cherie K. ELDER and her friend, Tom, of Phoenix, Ariz.; four
grandchildren, Debra RANKIN of Clarion, James L. Kifer of Rimersburg and
Scott Elder and Missy Elder, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; and six
great-grandchildren.
She also is survived by a brother, Jack Phillips of Buffalo, N.Y.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Kifer was preceded in death
by two sisters, Sara SMITH and Ruth Phillips.
Visitation will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Goble Funeral
Home of Clarion.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.
Interment will follow in Clarion Cemetery.
WILLIAM H. STEWART
William H. Stewart, 55, of Goffstown, N.H., a former Oil City resident,
died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in Catholic Medical Center, Manchester, N.H.,
after a brief illness.
Born Feb. 9, 1946, in Oil City, he was a son of Robert M. and the late
Emma G. HUGHEY Stewart.
Mr. Stewart was raised in Oil City and was a graduate of Venango Christian
High School. He attended the Cleveland Engineering Institute in Cleveland,
Ohio. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and received the Bronze
Star Oct. 28, 1967, for meritorious service.
Mr. Stewart had been a resident of Goffstown for the past 24 years.
He was employed as office manager/estimator for the Allstate Steel Co. of
Candia, N.H. He previously owned and operated Stewart Steel Co. of
Goffstown and also had been employed at the former Lyons Ironworks in
Manchester.
Mr. Stewart was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church in Goffstown and was
a member of the League of 1000 Men of the Precious Blood Monastery in
Manchester.
Surviving are his father, Robert M. Stewart of Albion; his wife, Sylvia
TETREAULT Stewart of Goffstown; three daughters, Jessica WHIPPLE of
Hooksett, N.H., Angela M. Stewart of Goffstown, and Cynthia L. PROVOST of
Manchester, N.H.; and four grandchildren.
He also is survived by a sister, Elaine M. MELQUIST of Albion; a brother,
Robert M. Stewart Jr. of St. Cloud, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Lambert Funeral
Home, 1799 Elm St., Manchester, N.H.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in St.
Lawrence Church, 63 Main St., Goffstown, N.H.
