COCHRAN, GIORDANO, MILLER, BROSIUS, OAKES, OLINGER, PATTON, RANKIN, SETH
Elma Luella Cochran, 98, a resident of Beverly Healthcare, Oil City, died at
4:57 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in Northwest Medical Center at
Franklin. Born Sept. 19, 1902, in Venus, she was a daughter of Michael and
Sarah Wolf Goodman. Mrs. Cochran was a member of the Rouseville United
Methodist Church. She also was a member of Ella Rebekah Lodge where she was
a district deputy president. She also was a member of the Gray Ladies at the
Oil City Hospital and the Rouseville Volunteer Fire Department. Mrs. Cochran
was married Sept. 1, 1919, to Guy Cochran, who died Feb. 6, 1993. Surviving
are three children, Mildred Ruth Culbertson of Rouseville, Guy W. Cochran
and his wife, Betty, of Oil City and Jack Leroy Cochran of Cherrytree; nine
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Cochran was preceded in death
by a daughter, Helen Marie Cochran; three sisters; and four brothers.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Morrison Funeral
Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home
with the Rev. John Boor, pastor of the Rouseville United Methodist Church,
officiating. Interment will be in Shaw Farm Cemetery. The family suggests
memorials be made to the Rouseville United Methodist Church or to the
Rouseville Volunteer Fire Department.
Anthony "Tony" Giordano, 69, of 150 W. Third St., died at 6:50 a.m.
Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in the Transitional Care Unit of Northwest
Medical Center, Oil City. Born April 4, 1931, in Oil City, he was the son of
the late Thomas and Sarah R. Ettare Giordano. He was a graduate of Oil City
High School. Mr. Giordano served as a corporal in the United States Army
during the Korean Conflict. He was a former Oil City businessman. He and his
wife owned and operated Tony's Candlelight Lounge on the city's North Side
for more than 20 years. He retired and sold the business in 1990. Mr.
Giordano was a member of St. Stephen Church. He enjoyed golfing, traveling
and spending time with his family. Mr. Giordano was married in St. Stephen
Church June 4, 1960, to Julia A. Hall, who survives. They were married by
the late Msgr. Louis J. Kelly. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four
children and their spouses, Kathleen Giordano of Oil City and Robert Shawgo
of Franklin, Anthony and Jenny Giordano of Long Mont, Colo., Bridget and
David Mancosh of Pittsburgh and Joseph and Debra Giordano of Boise, Idaho;
and six grandchildren, Bridey and Anna Shawgo, Tony Giordano Jr., Joseph
Giordano, Jessica Mancosh and David Mancosh. He also is survived by a
brother, Paul Giordano of Anaheim, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Giordano was preceded in death by a sister,
Mary Rose Giordano. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. Friday in the Reinsel Funeral Home, 116 Bissell Ave. Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Stephen Church with the
Rev. Jeffery J. Noble, pastor, presiding. Interment will follow in Calvary
Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Stephen Church Second Century Fund or
St. Stephen School.
Clara G. "Betty" Miller, 84, of Georgetown Road, Franklin RD 1, died at 5:02
a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in Northwest Medical Center at Franklin.
Born March 12, 1917, in Franklin, she was a daughter of Robert R. and Helen
B. Reagle Goss. She was a 1935 graduate of Franklin High School where she
enjoyed team sports and was a member of the girls basketball team. In later
years, she assisted on committees for the organization of class reunions.
After graduation, Mrs. Miller traveled to Alaska where she worked for the
U.S. Army as a secretary during the Alaskan Highway project. She enjoyed
both U.S. and foreign travel with her husband. They made several trips
throughout Europe, Hawaii, Israel, South America, New Zealand, Australia and
cruises to Mexico and throughout the Caribbean. Mrs. Miller was an
accomplished horsewoman and served for many years as a leader with the Ruff
Riders 4-H Club. She also attended trail rides and local horse shows with
her family. She had been a member of the Franklin YMCA since 1923 and up
until the past year, she was an avid swimmer and regularly enjoyed the "noon
swim" there. Mrs. Miller had worked as a residential service aide for Polk
Center. She had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin
since April 1, 1931, and had served as a deacon and as a member of the
Missionary Board and Women's Association. Mrs. Miller was married Sept. 17,
1948, at the home of her parents to Donald L. Miller, who survives. Also
surviving are three children, Donald James Miller and his wife, Cheryl, of
Franklin, Roberta L. Miller and her fiance, Harold Heart of Franklin, and
Sandra L. Ingham and partner, Edward Gisske of Madison, Wis.; four
grandchildren, Steven Smith of Madison, Wis., Holly Berkan Smith of Las
Vegas, Nev., Keith Miller and his fiancee, Heather McCleery of Knox, and
Kelly Miller of Savannah, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Clara and Isabel
Smith of Madison, Wis.; and two cousins, Charles Goss of Key Largo, Fla.,
and Gayle Warner of El Centero, Calif. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by
her parents and a sister, Barbara E. Prevost. The Robert W. Gardinier
Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the First Presbyterian
Church of Franklin with the Rev. Mark McCalla, pastor, officiating. He will
be assisted by Sandra Ingham, daughter of the deceased. Interment will be in
Franklin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church,
1250 Elk St., Franklin, 16323, or to the Franklin YMCA.
Ethel M. Ballentine Brosius, 83, of Punxsutawney RD 5, who had resided
briefly at Pennsylvania Memorial Home, Brookville, died at 5:05 p.m.
Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in the emergency room at Brookville Hospital. Born
July 15, 1917, in Summerville, she was a daughter of Samuel Edgar and Minna
Mae Alcorn Ballentine. She was a 1935 graduate of Summerville School. Mrs.
Brosius was a homemaker and enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing, crocheting
and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was married March
27, 1937, to Ernest Franklin Brosius, who preceded her in death. Surviving
are five daughters, Yvonne Marie Westerman of Munderf, Sandra L. Hinderliter
of Hawthorn, Betty J. Jenary of Oliveburg, Mary Jane Yingling of Curllsville
and Jessie K. Bouch of Mahaffey; a son, William James Brosius of
Harborcreek; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She also is
survived by three sisters, Helen E. "Betty" Kennedy of Punxsutawney, Jessie
G. Ballentine of Summerville and Jean Reed of Kansas City, Mo. In addition
to her parents and husband, Mrs. Brosius was preceded in death by two
sisters, three brothers and one grandson. The family will receive friends
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Furlong Funeral Home, corner of
Broad Street and First Avenue, Summerville. Funeral services will be held at
11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Wilson, pastor of
the Ohl, Cliff, Mount Pleasant and Stanton Methodist churches, officiating.
Interment will follow in Ohl Cemetery, Beaver Township, Jefferson County.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to a charity of one's choice.
Richard L. Oakes, 53, of 99 Glenview Ave., died at 1:59 p.m. Wednesday,
March 28, 2001, in Northwest Medical Center at Franklin. The Hutchinson
Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be
published Friday in The Derrick.
William Wade Olinger, 91, of Putneyville, New Bethlehem RD 1, Mahoning
Township, Armstrong County, died at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in
the Armstrong County Health Center, Kittanning. Born May 15, 1909, in Wayne
Township, Armstrong County, he was the son of William and Hannah
Schreckengost Olinger. Mr. Olinger lived his entire life in Armstrong
County. He was a driller and had worked for various gas companies. He was a
member of the Belknap United Church of Christ. Mr. Olinger was married March
2, 1932, to the former Lottie Rupp, who survives. Also surviving are a son
and his wife, Charles and Gerry Olinger of New Bethlehem RD 1; a daughter
and her husband, Marie and Harold Shreckengost of New Bethlehem RD 1; one
granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; and three stepgrandsons. He also is
survived by a sister, Margaret Smith of Kittanning; and a brother, Miles
Olinger of Kittanning. In addition to his parents, Mr. Olinger was preceded
in death by a grandson, Randy Shreckengost; and two brothers, Blair Olinger
and Burton Olinger. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and
from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the Charles D. Alcorn Funeral Home, Hawthorn.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with
the Rev. Lyle Westover, pastor of the Distant Baptist Church, officiating.
Interment will be in the Concord Cemetery, Wayne Township, Armstrong County.
Gerald J. Patton, 60, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Sugarcreek, died
unexpectedly Thursday, March 22, 2001, in Mount Carmel Hospital, Columbus.
Born June 28, 1940, in Sugarcreek, he was a son of the late Ivan J. and
Pauline G. Prior Patton. Mr. Patton had resided in Riverdale, Md., for 15
years prior to moving to Columbus in November 2000. He was a 1959 graduate
of Rocky Grove High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. At
the time of his death, Mr. Patton was employed with Lance Snack Food.
Surviving are a sister, Shirley M. Heller of Franklin; four brothers, James
E. Patton of Franklin and Robert L. Patton, John C. Patton and Paul R.
Patton, all of Ohio. In addition to his parents, Mr. Patton was preceded in
death by a brother, Kenneth I. Patton in November 2000. A memorial service
will be held at the convenience of the family.
Jack A. Rankin, 71, of Lawsonham Street, Rimersburg, died at 3:07 p.m.
Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in Clarion Hospital. Friends may call after 7
p.m. today in the Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home, Rimersburg. A complete
obituary will be published Friday in The Derrick.
Frieda Jane Hartsell Seth, 93, of Irving, Texas, formerly of Oil City, died
Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in Baylor Medical Center at Irving. Born June 3,
1907, in Seneca, she was a daughter of William Wilson Hartsell and Deemer
Rembold Hartsell. Mrs. Seth had resided for 56 years in Irving. She was a
50-year member and charter member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in
Irving and also was a 50-year member of St. Mark Episcopal Church in Irving.
Mrs. Seth, a homemaker, also was a member of the Irving Senior Citizens
Center. She was married in Mayville, N.Y., Aug. 21, 1925, to Leslie William
Seth, who died in 1987. Surviving are a daughter, Lucy Seth Lunce of Irving,
Texas; three grandsons and their wives, Stephen and Barbara Lunce of Laredo,
Texas, Gregory and Kim Lunce of Irving, Texas, and Leslie and Carol Lunce of
Plano, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Stephen Lunce II of Arlington,
Texas, Michael Lunce of Lewisville, Texas, and Kristian Lunce and Angela
Lunce, both of Irving, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to
her parents and husband, Mrs. Seth was preceded in death by two sisters and
four brothers. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the
Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Irving with the Rev. Mark Story as the
celebrant. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Irving.
The family requests memorials be made to the Episcopal Church of the
Redeemer, 2700 Warren Circle, Irving, Texas, 75062.
