I wondered who sent the first message. It was as though it came from a
website & not any one person. No name was attached.
I would think that the main function of a courthouse office was to handle
the affairs of the court (the primary focus would be the most current
cases). It is not a store whose primary function is to sell as much as
possible & would carry bags/envelopes/etc (although Sams Club does not
provide these items either).
Maybe you weren't quite as prepared as you thought you were given the
conditions of the day?

After I read your note, Carol-Jeanne, I thought I should elaborate a bit.
After more than 25 years of on-site visits, I always enter a courthouse
office prepared with specific questions that I've identified from
preliminary research (Handybook, Web sites, list mail, etc.) into what's
available. I do my dead-level best not to bother staff members once I've
obtained basic information from them. Here are some examples of what I met
with on this trip:
1. I purchased two copies of the 2002 edition of the Plat Book from the
Assessment Office. Because it was pouring rain and windy outside, I asked
if they had an envelope I could put the books in to keep them dry. They
told me no -- but didn't offer to ask around to see if another office had
one or suggest that I check elsewhere. They recommended I put the books in
my backpack, which isn't waterproofed.
2. I purchased two large (3' x 4' or so) 911 road maps from the Planning
Office. I asked the woman who waited on me if she had an envelope I could
slip the maps into to keep them dry (since they were created with an ink
plotter and would've ruined if wet). Her surprising response was, "We don't
sell office supplies." I asked if she had any suggestions, and she said,
"Staples at the Mall."
I guess I figured incorrectly that, if I spent $80 in 15 minutes, it wasn't
too much to ask for a way to keep the purchases from being damaged...

I have been going to the Clarion County Court House for almost 36 years. I
have never been met with anything but a helpful and courteous staff. As
long as you don't expect them to do your research for you, they are more
than willing to help and direct you to the right records. Maybe it depends
on the attitude of the researcher. If you are self-sufficient, you are met
with courtesy. They have other work to do.
Just wanted to set the record straight. Never had a problem there.
