CHESTNUT, EVANEK, FRANKS, JONES, RUSSELL

Ronald E. Chestnut, 73, of Route 861, New Bethlehem, Porter Township,
Clarion County, died at 4:55 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2002, at his
residence. Born Aug. 2, 1928, in Deanville, Armstrong County, he was the
son of Arnold F. and Sarah Miles Chestnut. He was a veteran of the
Korean War, serving from 1952 to 1954. Mr. Chestnut was a truck driver
for the H.B. Deviney Co. of New Bethlehem and later worked 12 years for
the New Bethlehem Post Office before his retirement. He was a member of
the First Church of God in New Bethlehem. After his retirement, he
ministered for the First Church of God for a number of years. Mr.
Chestnut was married April 23, 1949, to Mary A. Pence, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, David E. Chestnut and his wife, Terri, of
Mount Airy, Md.; and a grandson, Christian Chestnut of Mount Airy, Md.
He also is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ella Reese of New York and Judy
Womeldorf of Knox; and two brothers, Arnold Chestnut Jr. of Hamburg,
N.Y., and George Chestnut of New Bethlehem. In addition to his parents,
Mr. Chestnut was preceded in death by two brothers, Victor Chestnut and
Carl Chestnut; and one sister, Melzene Reese. Friends may call from 2 to
4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Charles D. Alcorn Funeral Home, Hawthorn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the First Church of
God, New Bethlehem, with viewing in the church from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to
the services. The Rev. John C. Phillips, pastor of the First Church of
God in New Bethlehem, will officiate. Interment will be in Squirrel Hill
Cemetery, Porter Township, Clarion County.

Joseph Paul Evanek, 89, of Smith Street, Rimersburg, died Friday, July
26, 2002, in Clarview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Sligo RD 1,
following an illness. Born April 18, 1913, in Huey, he was the son of
Joseph Charles and Susan Sophia Charney Evanek. He was a 1932 graduate
of Sligo High School. Mr. Evanek served with the U.S. Army as an M.P.
and then was assigned to work in a copper mine near Jerome, Ariz., and
Miami, Ariz., for the U.S. government during World War II. He had been
employed with Superior Cherry Run Coal Co. prior to entering the Army.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he was employed as a
postal clerk in Omaha, Neb. Mr. Evanek was a member of St. Richard Roman
Catholic Church in Rimersburg. He was married in St. Richard Church,
Rimersburg, May 18, 1953, to Wilmetta Crawford, who died in 1964.
Surviving are two brothers, John Evanek and wife, Roberta, of Baton
Rouge, La., and George Evanek of Rimersburg; three sisters, Margaret
Evanek Colyvas of Washington, D.C., Madeline M. Evanek of Suitland, Md.,
and Ella Evanek Brooks of Sligo; and several nieces and nephews. Mr.
Evanek was preceded in death by his father Oct. 2, 1943; his mother Jan.
15, 1984; a sister, Mary Evanek Bartley, 1986; and a brother and sister
in infancy. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the
Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home, Rimersburg. Mass of Christian Burial
will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Richard Church, Rimersburg,
with the Rev. William Kuba, pastor, presiding. Interment will follow in
St. Eusebius Cemetery, East Brady RD 1.

Harold S. Franks Sr., 78, of Kennerdell RD, formerly of Franklin, died
at 1:40 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2002, at his residence after a brief
illness. Born July 3, 1924, in Bessemer, he was the son of Michael and
Elizabeth Rodgers Franks. Mr. Franks attended the public schools in the
Bessemer area. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United
States Army. Mr. Franks retired in 1981 as a mechanic from the Port
Authority of Allegheny County. He was a member of the Church of the
Nazarene in Franklin. Mr. Franks enjoyed hunting, fishing and wood
working. He was married Jan, 26, 1968, to Sara P. Anderson, who died
Nov. 4, 1996. Surviving are three sons, Harold S. Franks Jr. and Harry
W. Franks, both of Orlando, Fla., and Herbert M. Franks and his wife,
Vuong N., of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. Stan (Debra) Cycak
of Latrobe and Mrs. John (Darlene R.) Taylor of Middletown, Conn.; eight
grandchildren, Harold Franks III, Teresa Livingston, Michael Franks,
Steven Franks, John Frank, Diane Taylor, Suzanne Williams and Mike
Rosenbauer; and nine great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one
brother, William Franks of Glendale, Ariz. In addition to his parents
and wife, Mr. Franks was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Diana
Franks; one sister; his twin brother, Howard Franks; and one grandchild,
Michelle Trump. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in
the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, 109 Emlenton St., Clintonville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with
the Rev. Donald Chamberlain, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene,
Franklin, officiating. Interment will be in the Clintonville Methodist
Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Hospice
of Venango County, 176 E. Bissell Ave., Oil City, 16301.

Philip Myron Jones, 95, of 618 N. Maple St., Emporium, a Franklin
native, died Friday, July 26, 2002, in Beverly Healthcare-Oil City. Born
Feb. 18, 1907, in Franklin, he was the son of Myron A. and Sadie
Stallsmith Jones. He attended Defiance College in Ohio where he received
a bachelor of science degree in education and was active in music and
sports. He later received a master's degree in education from the
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Mr. Jones spent his entire
professional career in the public education system. He began his career
as principal of Pioneer Public Schools in Pioneer, Ohio, where he also
taught mathematics and science in addition to coaching several athletic
teams. He subsequently occupied similar positions at schools in
Randolph, Ohio, and Southington, Ohio. He eventually became principal of
the Keating Township School System and later, principal of Smethport
High School, both in McKean County. He ended his career as county
superintendent of schools in Cameron County, retiring from that position
in the late 1960s. Until recent years, Mr. Jones was an active Rotarian
and Mason and did volunteer work for the American Cancer Society. Mr.
Jones was a member of the Emporium First United Methodist Church. He was
an avid fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman. Surviving are his wife of 67
years, June Caroline Swanson Jones; a son, Robert V. Jones of Woodstock,
N.Y.; and a daughter, Mary Kathleen Swatzler of Franklin. He also is
survived by a sister, Margaret Tuza of Cleveland, Ohio; and numerous
nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jones was preceded
in death by two daughters, Sylvia Ann Davis and Karen Felicity
Berkenfeld. A graveside ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Gibbs
Hill Cemetery, Ludlow, with the Rev. Edwin E. McElroy officiating. The
Cummings Funeral Home, 151 Greeves St., Kane, is in charge of
arrangements. The family requests memorial contributions be sent to the
American Cancer Society or to the Alzheimer's Society.

Ruth Allyn Ramage Russell, 66, of Cherrybrook Drive, Nicholasville, Ky.,
formerly of Oil City, died Thursday, July 18, 2002. She was born in Oil
City, the daughter of the late Samuel Young Ramage III and Josephine
Allyn Ramage Rupp. She was an alumni of Greer Preparatory School and
Stephens College. Mrs. Russell was the widow of William Edward Russell.
She was a former Sports Illustrated Sportswoman of the Year. Mrs.
Russell was a licensed horse trainer in Kentucky, Ohio and England and
was the former owner of Spring Tree Farms in Burton, Ohio. She loved
horses, animals, antiques and gardening. Surviving are her pet and
special companion, Amy; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be
held at 1 p.m. today in the Betts & West Funeral Home, 404 N. Main St.,
Nicholasville, Ky., with the Rev. Jack Emerick officiating. Donations
are suggested to the Jessamine County Humane Society, Nicholasville,
Ky., 40356.
