GWEN J. BAUM
Gwen J. Baum, 85, of 120 Front St., Franklin, died Thursday, March
13, 2003, in UPMC Northwest, Franklin.
Born March 13, 1918, in Rocky Grove, she was the daughter of Snowden
and Hazel Clark Heffernan.
Mrs. Baum retired in 1975 from CPT where she worked as a supervisor
in the accounting department.
She attended the Rocky Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Baum liked to crochet and enjoyed traveling and bingo.
She was married Jan. 16, 1948, to Fred W. Baum, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter and her husband, Barbara and Thomas
Davis of Franklin; two grandchildren and their spouses, Randy and
Polly Davis of Punxsutawney and Ted and Tammi Davis of Reno; and four
great-grandchildren, Jason and Jonelle Davis of Reno and Christian and
Marcus Barilar of Punxsutawney.
Mrs. Baum was preceded in death by her parents.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Robert W.
Gardinier Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home
with the Rev. Daniel Callahan, pastor of the Rocky Grove Avenue
Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to The Caring Place.
ALFRED M. BISH
Alfred M. Bish, 85, of 32 Chestnut St., Stoneboro, formerly of
Punxsutawney, died at 2:40 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2003, in United
Community Hospital, Grove City, after a brief illness.
Born Feb. 26, 1918, in Porter, he was the son of Alfred W. and Anna
M. Gahagan Bish.
He attended Porter schools in Jefferson County.
Mr. Bish worked as a farmer and a coal miner. He retired after 35
years as a dragline operator for both the Testa Coal Co. and the Lucas
Coal Co. of Mercer County. He then worked five years for the Sandy
Lake Borough Maintenance Department, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the Lakewood Church of God.
Mr. Bish enjoyed family gatherings, spending time with his children
and grandchildren, hunting and gardening.
He was married Oct. 14, 1939, to Geraldine Shields, who survives at
Orchard Manor Nursing Home, 20 Orchard Drive, Grove City 16127.
Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Donna) Elliott and
Mrs. Alec (Shirley) Spangler, both of Sandy Lake, Mrs. Ralph (Helen)
Bullman of Stoneboro and Mrs. John (Doris) Malloy of Bryan's Road,
Md.; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four
great-great-grandchildren.
He also is survived by one sister, Bessie McCurdy of Newton Falls,
Ohio.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Bish was preceded in death by one
son, Richard Merle Bish; one daughter, Kathryn Jean Flaherty; three
brothers, Frank Bish, Gary Bish and Clayton Bish; and three sisters,
Lula McMillan, Wilda Sherry and Alice Elford.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Scott A.
Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro, and from 10 to 11 a.m.
Monday in the Lakeview Church of God.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the church with
the Rev. Patrick Vance, pastor, officiating.
Interment and committal services will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery,
Sandy Lake Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lakeview Church of God,
2479 Mercer Road, Stoneboro, 16153.
LINDA HARTZELL
Linda Hartzell, 52, of Lucinda, died at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, March
12, 2003, in Clarion Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born July 4, 1950, in Paint Township, Clarion County, she was the
daughter of James and Margaret Blair Hartzell.
Miss Hartzell was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are a brother, Jack Hartzell of New York; four sisters,
Clara Stauffer of New York, Charlotte Dolby of Lucinda, Esther Bell of
Knox and Ethel Eck of Vowinckel; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Miss Hartzell was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Peggy
Myers; and an infant twin sister, Donna.
There will be no calling hours.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
The Robert V. Burns Funeral Home of Clarion is in charge of
arrangements.
MARGARET L. 'PEGGY' KLINGER
Margaret L. "Peggy" Klinger, 80, of 32 Lamberton St., Rocky Grove,
died at 2:07 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2003, in UPMC Northwest,
Franklin.
Born Oct. 24, 1922, in Venus, she was the daughter of Henry and Wilda
McLaughlin Confer.
She was a graduate of Oil City High School and the Oil City
Beautician School.
Mrs. Klinger was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Rocky
Grove.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, reading and discussing history
and current world events. She also enjoyed spending time with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Klinger was married Dec. 24, 1945, to Ralph D. Klinger Jr., who
died Feb. 19, 1997.
Surviving are three children, Carol A. Scurry and husband, Michael
D., of Laughlin, Nev., A.J. Klinger and Linda S. Coogan and husband,
Jack, all of Franklin; six grandchildren, Michael Scurry and Patty
Hogue, Lisa McFall and husband, J.J., all of Oil City, Michelle Scurry
of Las Vegas, Nev., S. Jill Klemp and husband, Alan, of Austin, Texas,
Matthew Scurry of Laughlin, Nev., and Joe Morgan of Pittsburgh; and
eight great-grandchildren, Silas, Jackson and Will McFall, Marcus,
Allison, Michaela, Michael and Mykenna Scurry.
She also is survived by two sisters, Lorraine Reed and husband, Jack,
of Oil City and Helen Confer of Franklin; a brother, Wade Confer of
Bradford; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Klinger was preceded in
death by six brothers, Osman Confer, Richard Confer, Chester Confer,
Ronald Confer, Norman Confer and Paul Confer; and two sisters, Mrs.
John (Dorthea) Kahle and Martha Wood.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Huff
Chapel, 312 W. Park St., Franklin.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home
with the Rev. David L. Parker, pastor of the Grace United Methodist
Church, Franklin, officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.
The family suggests donations be made to the United Way of Venango
County, Allegheny Blvd., P.O. Box 303, Reno, 16343, or to Grace United
Methodist Church, 350 Front St., Franklin, 16323.
MARY ESTHER CARROLL LITTLE
Mary Esther Carroll Little, 86, of Centertown Road, Grove City, died
Thursday afternoon, March 13, 2003, in the United Community Hospital,
Grove City.
Born May 16, 1916, in Worth Township, Mercer County, she was the
daughter of James R. and Thelma I. Smith Carroll.
She attended Millbrook School and was a graduate of Grove City High
School.
Mrs. Little attended Feller's Beauty College in Oil City and worked
as a beautician from 1936 until 1992.
She also worked for the American Cancer Society for 35 years.
Mrs. Little was a member of the Millbrook Presbyterian Church for
more than 75 years and served as an elder, clerk of sessions, piano
player and vocalist.
She also was a member of the Lady Worth Rebekah Lodge and the
Lakeview Music Club.
Mrs. Little was a homemaker who loved gardening and was an avid
Pittsburgh Pirates fan and newspaper reader.
She was married Oct. 18, 1941, to William E. Little, who preceded her
in death.
Surviving are three daughters, Diane Burkhardt of Wading River, Long
Island, N.Y., Marcia Heinrichs of Scranton and Deborah K. Little of
Loveland, Ohio; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She also is survived by one brother, Dr. James R. Carroll of Lubbock,
Texas.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Little was preceded in
death by a brother, David G. Carroll.
Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday in the Alexander-McMullen
Funeral Home, 3236 S. Main St., Sandy Lake.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Millbrook
Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Terry Greenlee officiating.
Interment will follow in the Union Home Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 19
Jefferson Ave., Sharon, 16146.
SAMUEL D. McFETRIDGE
Samuel D. McFetridge, 78, of 519 Hiland Ave., Oil City, died at 8:20
a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2003, in Beverly Healthcare-Oil City after an
extended illness.
Born Sept. 27, 1924, in Oil City, he was the son of Samuel H. and
Ruby E. Hollabaugh McFetridge.
Mr. McFetridge attended the Oil City schools.
In his youth, he auditioned for the role of Spanky in the show, "The
Little Rascals," and in the event the first-place winner became ill,
Mr. McFetridge would have replaced him in the show.
Mr. McFetridge served as constable of the Fourth Ward in Oil City for
more than 20 years. He was appointed to the post by the late Judge Lee
A. McCracken and then was elected for a second full term.
He completed several programs and took a general law enforcement
class at Clarion State College. He holds a certificate for
successfully completing a course in minor court procedure that
included instruction in traffic court, court room procedure, hearings,
civil law and criminal procedures, dockets and transcripts.
Mr. McFetridge also received a certificate in 1960 from the
Department of Public Instruction and from the Public Service Institute
Board of Minor Judiciary School. He also received a certificate from
the Public Service Institute of Pennsylvania for completing a 12-week
course in criminal law. He had extensive FBI training.
He was one of only a few who worked for Keystone Ordinance Works in
Geneva, Pa., making TNT for the government for the war effort.
Mr. McFetridge had been a businessman in Oil City for many years,
owning Sam's Home Improvement and Sam's New and Used Merchandise.
He had been a member of St. Stephen Church and was a member of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Squires and Constables Association. He
also had served as a committeeman for Boy Scout Troop 11 of St.
Stephen parish. He was a former member of the Venango Valley CB Club.
Mr. McFetridge enjoyed hunting, fishing, antiques, skiing and flying.
He loved Big Band music and knew most of the Big Band leaders. He was
a skilled pool player, sharpshooter, played the piano and liked to
dance. He taught Reservists how to drive tanks.
He was married by the Rev. Robert Griffen in St. Stephen Church to
the former Marion Lutz, who survives.
Also surviving are six children, Donald McFetridge and wife, Kim, of
Pleasantville, Terrance McFetridge and wife, Cynthia, of Oil City,
Judy McFetridge Linch and husband, Kenneth, of Oil City, Michael
McFetridge and wife, Jerrilyn, of Rouseville, Patrick McFetridge and
his fiancee, Marge Lucas, of Oil City, and Nancy McFetridge of Oil
City and Charles Majesky; 13 grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
He also is survived by a sister, Frances Hepler of Titusville.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McFetridge was preceded in death by a
granddaughter, Julia McFetridge.
Funeral services will be private.
Interment will be in Lamey Cemetery.
The Reinsel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oil City Library, Franklin
Library, Beverly Healthcare or to St. Stephen Church Second Century
Fund.
EVELYN JEAN 'TOOTIE' MILLER
Evelyn Jean "Tootie" Miller, 70, of Strattanville, wife of Richard A.
Miller, died early Thursday evening, March 13, 2003, in Clarion
Hospital.
The Robert V. Burns Funeral Home, Clarion, is in charge of
arrangements.

JULIA P. STILLER RODDY
Julia P. Stiller Roddy, 74, formerly of 202 Clarion St., Oil City,
died at 6:05 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in the Oil City
Presbyterian Home.
Born March 7, 1929, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Benjamin and
Agnes Karchner Stiller.
She was a 1947 graduate of Oil City High School and had lived most of
her life in the Oil City area.
Mrs. Roddy was employed as a bookkeeper for a number of years by
Oliver Brothers.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Oil City.
Mrs. Roddy enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.
She was married Jan. 4, 1952, to Bert E. Roddy, who died Sept. 5,
1996.
Surviving are three sons and their wives, Scott E. and Suzi Roddy and
Norman D. and Sally Roddy, all of Oil City, and John E. and Melissa
Roddy of Franklin; four grandchildren, Sharon Roddy, Jackie Roddy,
Aaron Roddy and Jason Roddy; and one great-granddaughter, Abigail
Roddy.
She also is survived by two brothers, Richard Stiller and Benjamin
Stiller, both of Oil City; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Roddy was preceded in
death by a son, Michael E. Roddy; a sister, Marietta Wagner; a
brother, Victor Stiller; and a granddaughter, Brittani Roddy.
There will be no visitation.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, in
Trinity United Methodist Church, 2 Center St., Oil City, with the Rev.
Bruce K. Merritt, pastor, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes
Association, the American Cancer Society, Trinity United Methodist
Church or to the Oil City Presbyterian Home.
GARY C. WENNER
Gary C. Wenner, 64, of Knox RD, died at 6:25 p.m. Thursday, March 13,
2003, in Clarion Hospital.
The David C. McEntire Funeral Home in Knox is in charge of
arrangements.
