Donald L. Adams, 73, of 151 Elm St., Franklin, died at 1:25 a.m. Friday,
May 30, 2003, in Sugar Creek Station. Born March 3, 1930, in Polk, he
was the son of Lester Adams Sr. and Dorothy Carter. He attended public
schools in Polk. Mr. Adams was employed for several years by Harry
Brothers Water, and after that he worked several more years in the
maintenance department at Polk Center, retiring from there. He was a
member Bethel United Methodist Church and the National Rifle
Association. His main interest was flying his own plane from his own
airstrip in Polk. Mr. Adams spent the winters in Florida with his wife
and returned in the summer to Franklin to spend his time farming. He was
married Dec. 3, 1975, to the former Patty Boals, who survives. Also
surviving are two sons and their wives, Gerald and Doris Adams of Polk
and Larry and Sue Adams of Utica; a daughter, Brenda Horner of Lehigh,
Fla.; six grandchildren, Jason Adams and Julie Ray of Polk, Jessica
Doyle and husband, Terry, of Utica, Tammie Adams, a student at Grove
City College, and Dawn Adams and Robbie Kreik of Franklin; and four
great-grandchildren, Alexa Doyle of Utica, Zachery Ray and Emily Irons
of Polk and Holly Horner of Leligh, Fla. He also is survived by three
sisters, Clara M. Young of Erie, Sue Hart and husband, Bob, of
Greenville and Doris Hilbert and husband, Meryl, of Huntsville, Ala.;
two brothers and their wives, Lester Adams Jr. and Twila and the Rev.
Darrel Adams and Ethel, all of Polk; and several nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7
to 9 p.m. today in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St. Funeral services
will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home with the Rev. Joseph
P. Martin, pastor of Bethel United Methodist Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Sandy Cemetery.
LaVerne D. Beisel, 74, of 1000 Pone Lane, Franklin, died at 11:32 a.m.
Friday, May 30, 2003, in UPMC Northwest, Franklin. Born Sept. 21, 1928,
in Franklin, she was the daughter of R. Dallas and Ethel Swarthout
Dille. She was a 1946 graduate of Franklin High School. Mrs. Beisel
worked as an inside salesperson from 1971 to 1989 at Franklin Steel. She
was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and the church choir
where she sang soprano. Mrs. Beisel enjoyed needlework, flowers and
music. She was married Oct. 6, 1951, to Charles W. Beisel, who died Oct.
12, 1990. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lorenzo (Kathy) Burch of
King of Prussia and Mrs. Ronald (Molly) Fiely of Franklin; and four
grandchildren, Maya Burch of Lancaster and Veronica Fiely, Breanne Fiely
and Joey Fiely, all of Franklin; In addition to her parents and husband,
Mrs. Beisel was preceded in death by two sisters, Irma N. Davis, Dec. 7,
1978, and Ola Diegel. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday in the
Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home in Franklin. Funeral services will be
held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. John Sass of
the Uniontown Heights Sunday School officiating. Interment will be in
Franklin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross or a
charity of one's choice.
Dorothy E. Bimber, 89, of 504 W. Second St., Oil City, died at 7:58 a.m.
Friday, May 30, 2003, at her residence. Born July 12, 1913, in Warren,
Pa., she was the daughter of Raymond and Edith Sikstrom Still. Mrs.
Bimber was a member of Franklin Free Methodist Church She was a
homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, her family and grandchildren. Mrs.
Bimber was married June 20, 1940, to Franklin A. Bimber, who died March
1, 1987. Surviving are three sons, Terry D. Bimber of Oil City, Danny R.
Bimber of Polk and Raymond E. Walbridge of St. Petersburg; a daughter,
Mrs. Raya Stahlman of Oil City; 14 grandchildren, Dottie Downing and
husband, Patrick, and Eric Bimber of Franklin; Jamie Kase and husband,
Robbie, Jackie Dolby and husband, Mike, Terry Umstead, Tammy Ruth and
husband, Alan, and Danny J. Bimber and wife, Heather, all of Oil City,
Wendy Tucker and husband, Steve, Glenn Barcinas and wife, Sharry, and
Danny R. Bimber, all of Seneca; Dottie Eldrich and husband, Kevin, of
Virginia; Christian Brand and wife, Sandra, of Germany; Raya Vezina and
husband, Raymond, of Florida, and Robert Walbridge and wife of New
England; and 19 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a brother,
Robert Still, and a sister, Raya Nelson, both of Warren, Pa. In addition
to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bimber was preceded in death by one
son, Richard Bimber; one brother, Clifford Still; and two sisters,
Adelaide Genberg and Lois Rudolph. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to
9 p.m. Sunday in the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home, Franklin. Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the
Rev. Dillon Vroman, retired Free Methodist minister, officiating.
Interment will be in Cooperstown Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the
VNA Foundation.
Harry Bishop Caldwell II, 82, died at 9 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2003, in
Jefferson Manor Health Center, Brookville. However, he fully enjoyed his
declining years at his Brookville farm after moving from Harrisburg
several years ago. He was born April 27, 1921, in Romney, W.Va., the son
of Harry Bishop Caldwell Sr. and Margaret "Margo" Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell
enlisted in the Navy during World War II after graduation and
encountered some serious engagements while serving in the South Pacific.
He accepted a position as bookkeeper for the L&R. After working for the
commonwealth and federal government, he was appointed an auditor for the
Department of Agriculture, retiring from there at age 65. Mr. Caldwell
was an avid hunter and enjoyed all outdoor sports and had a prize
18-point buck trophy. Also in his early years he was engaged in amateur
boxing contests with some success. Surviving are his wife, Deloris
Hummel Caldwell, whom he married Feb. 14, 1952; his brother, Melvin
Caldwell of Holidaysburg; and a sister-in-law, Theresa Caldwell of
Clarion. In addition to his parents, Mr. Caldwell was preceded in death
by a brother, Emerson Caldwell of Clarion. Viewing will be held from
noon to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Robert V. Burns Funeral Home, Clarion.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home with
the Rev. Kirk Orr, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Clarion,
officiating. Interment will be in New Rehoboth-Presbyterian Church
Cemetery.
Sherry Lynn Deemer, 43, of Country Living Trailer Park, Strattanville,
died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Brookville Hospital. Born Dec. 16, 1959,
in Clarion, she was a daughter of Eugene H. Beers and Rena Marie Deemer.
Ms. Deemer is survived by her father; her stepmother, Delores Beers; her
stepfather, Rick Sagges; two sons, Clifford Deemer and Ronnie Dawson;
two daughters, Tiffany Schreckengost and Cara Deemer; and two
stepbrothers, Rick McDougle and Rick Sagges Jr. Also surviving are two
sisters, Denise Clinger and Kathy Mitchell; one half sister, Delores
Beers; three stepsisters, Carol Clinger, Sheryl Allio and Tammy
McDougle; and one granddaughter, Brittany Deemer. Ms. Deemer was
preceded in death by her mother. A memorial service will be held at 1
p.m. Sunday in Zion Baptist Church, Reidsburg. The Goble Funeral Home of
Clarion is in charge of arrangements.
Daniel Jeffrey Distel, 30, of Franklin, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, in
Nashville, Ill. Born March 5, 1973, in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was the son
of Carl W. and Linda Distel of West Portsmouth, Ohio, and Eunice McNelly
Distel of Piketon, Ohio. He was a 1991 graduate of Piketon High School,
Piketon, Ohio, and earned his electrical engineering degree at Ohio
University. Mr. Distel was employed as an electrical engineer at Joy
Mining Machinery Co. in Franklin. He attended Elm Grove Church of Christ
in Elm Grove, Ohio, and the Dry Run Mission Church in West Portsmouth,
Ohio. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are grandparents, Jewell
Distel of West Portsmouth and Stanley and Zelma McNelly of Piketon; four
brothers, Carl Dwayne Distel of South Webster, Ohio, Darin Distel and
wife, Amy, Wayne Stewart and wife, Brandi, and John Stewart and wife,
Angie, all of West Portsmouth; two sisters, Jennifer Mills and husband,
Eric, of Bainbridge, Ohio, and Angie Stevens Smith of Lucasville, Ohio;
nieces and nephews, Michelle Smith Hawk, Sarah and Nathan Distel,
Christopher and Cole Distel, Gage and Logan Mills and Breanna Stephens;
and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by a
grandfather, Carl Distel. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. today in
the Botkin Funeral Home, 314 East North St., Waverly, Ohio. Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the funeral home with the Rev.
David Distel officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery, Piketon,
Ohio.
Norbert A. Lengauer, 91, of 339 East Jamestown Road, West Salem
Township, Greenville, formerly of 33 Lake St., Stoneboro, died at 8:45
p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, after a brief
illness. Born June 6, 1911, in Lake Township, Mercer County, he was the
son of Michael and Theresa Mariacher Lengauer. He attended the former
Stoneboro schools. In his early years, Mr. Lengauer worked in the coal
mines of Domestic Fuel of Jackson Center and the Number 5 Mine of
Leesburg. He worked for eight years for the New York Central Railroad
and seven years for the Borough of Stoneboro maintenance department. He
retired in 1976 from Westinghouse, Sharon Transformer Division, after 28
years of service. He was a member of Stoneboro United Methodist Church
and Stoneboro Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Mr. Lengauer
served on Stoneboro Borough Council, and in 1997, along with his wife,
they were named "Stoneboro Station Days King and Queen." He was a member
of the Sharon Westinghouse Retirees. Mr. Lengauer enjoyed gardening and
working in his yard, taking much pride in his work. He loved his family
and enjoyed all of the family gatherings. He also enjoyed playing cards
and swinging on his backyard swing. He was married May 10, 1933, to the
former Emaline M. McClearn, who survives at Ridgewood, 339 East
Jamestown Road, Greenville. They were married for 70 years. Also
surviving are one daughter and her husband, Norma Jean and Ralph McClay
of Meadville; three sons and their wives, Philip E. and JoAnne Lengauer
of Stoneboro, Gary N. and Mary Irene Lengauer of Sandy Lake and Michael
J. and Peggy Lengauer of Stoneboro; nine grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lengauer was
preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Jane Lengauer; one grandson, Todd
A. McClay; three brothers, Edward, Paul and Matthew Lengauer; and two
sisters, Rosella Armstrong and Margaret Alexander. Friends may call from
2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99
Franklin St., Stoneboro. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday
in the funeral home with the Rev. J. Richard Lichtenberger, retired

Mary A. Mensch, 84, of Marienville, died of natural causes Friday, May
30, 2003, in her home. Born Aug. 22, 1918, in Sigel, she was the
daughter of Jacob S. and Florence Belle Vandervort Songer. Mrs. Mensch
was a member of St. Ann Church and the Woman's Club of the church. She
was past president of the VFW auxiliary. She was married in St. Mary
Church, Crown, Jan. 13, 1940, to Roy A. Mensch, who died Nov. 7, 1990.
Surviving are a son, David L. Mensch of Port Allegany; three daughters,
Gloria Ann Stultz of Coudersport, Mary Sue Mensch of Enola and Bonnie
Marie Mensch of Clearwater, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Teresa A.
Mensch of Baltimore, Md., and Matthew D. Stultz of Bradenton, Fla. She
also is survived by a brother, A.V. Songer of Lyndonville, N.Y. In
addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Mensch was preceded in death
by a brother, Leo Songer, April 16, 2002; a sister, Ann C. Deitrick, Oct
10, 1997; and a grandson, Ian Michael Stultz, April 28, 1976. The family
will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Ronald
McDonald Funeral Home, Marienville. Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Ann Catholic Church, Marienville.
Interment will be in St. Ann Cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Hoderny
presiding.
James B. "Ben" Myers, 74, of Knox RD 2, died at 5:52 a.m. Friday, May
30, 2003, in Hamot Medical Center, Erie. Born Oct. 9, 1928, in Turkey
City, he was the son of Joseph and Marie Baynham Myers. Mr. Myers was a
graduate of St. Petersburg High School and Clarion University. He was an
Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as a sergeant first class in the
Survey Corps. Mr. Myers worked in the engineering department of Glass
Containers Corp. in Knox for nearly 40 years. He was Beaver Township
secretary from 1983 to the present. Mr. Myers was an active member of
St. Paul Lutheran Church, Knox RD 2. He also belonged to the
DeHart-Rossman-Wenner American Legion Post of Lamartine and the Brooks
Bird Club. He enjoyed walks in the woods, hunting, bird watching,
sporting events and spending time with his family, especially his
grandchildren. Mr. Myers was married Sept. 1, 1950, to Evelyn Rowe, who
survives. Also surviving are a daughter and her husband, Cindy and Paul
Curran of Knox; a son and his wife, Dale and Barb Myers of Knox; and
five grandchildren, Emily Myers, Alison Myers, Aimee Myers, Zachary
Curran and Michelle Curran, all of Knox. He also is survived by four
brothers, Joseph Myers and his wife, Phyllis, of Cedar Park, Texas,
William Myers and his wife, Janet, of Knox, Kenneth "Jiggs" Myers of
Shippenville and Donald Myers and his wife, Poppy, of Parker; and
several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. In addition
to his parents, Mr. Myers was preceded in death by two sisters, Phyllis
Best and Helen Dunkle. The family will receive friends from noon to 2
and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the David C. McEntire Funeral Home, Knox, and
from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Twin Church Road,
Knox. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the church with

military honors will follow in St. Paul Union Cemetery. The family

Nellie Phyllis Olsofka, 86, of 106 Warren St., Oil City, died at 6:30
a.m. Friday, May 30, 2003, at her home following an extended illness.
Born Oct. 1, 1916, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Frank and Aniela
Deputat Woloszyn. She was a 1937 graduate of Oil City High School. Mrs.
Olsofka worked at the W.T. Grant Co. and at Loblaws and also catered
many events for more than 10 years in the area. As a member of
Assumption BVM Church, she ran the bingo there for more than a decade.
She was president of the church Rosary Society for many years, and she
maintained her membership in the Rosary Society and had been a member of
the Golden Agers since its existence. Mrs. Olsofka enjoyed traveling and
bingo. She was married in Assumption BVM Church by the Rev. John L.
Mieczkowski May 29, 1938, to Nicholas Stephen Olsofka, who died Nov. 28,
1978. Surviving are a son and his wife, Frank and Wyvonne Olsofka of
Mayfield, Ky.; three daughters, Anna Marie Larkin of Oil City, Sister
Louise Marie Olsofka, CSSF, of Coraopolis, and Betty Gardinier of Oil
City; five grandchildren, Kevin Larkin of Pittsburgh, Christine Jones of
Milton, Ontario, and John Olsofka, Diane Wallace and Debbie Olsofka, all
of Louisville, Ky.; and six great-grandchildren. She also is survived by
two brothers, Frank Woloszyn of Oil City and Matthew Woloszyn and his
wife, Evie, of Erie; and a sister, Sophie Kamienski of Oil City. In
addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Olsofka was preceded in death
by three brothers, Michael Woloszyn, Joseph Woloszyn and Walter
Woloszyn; and one sister, Bernice Kalamajka. Friends may call from 2 to
4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Reinsel Funeral Home, Oil City. Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday in Assumption BVM
Church with Father John Neff, pastor, presiding. Interment will follow
in Calvary Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to the
Felician Sisters Convent, Coraopolis, or the Venango County VNA Hospice.
Patricia "Patty" Beth Sterrett, 37, of Ft. Myers, Fla., formerly of
Grove City, died in her home. Born June 8, 1965, in Grove City, she was
a daughter of Robert and Mary Emily McCullough Sterrett. A 1983 Franklin
High School graduate, she attended Slippery Rock University before
moving to Florida in 1985. Growing up on a dairy farm in Venango County,
she raised sheep and showed them with the 4-H, winning many awards. In
high school, Ms. Sterrett played alto saxophone with the Franklin
marching and stage bands. She attended regional band for two years. Ms.
Sterrett enjoyed music, reading and her cat, Robby. She was a member of
Amity Presbyterian Church, Grove City. Ms. Sterrett worked for General
Electric in Ft. Myers as an accountant from 1987 to 1999, training many
of her coworkers. She is survived by her parents and three sisters, Lori
Browne and Amy Polkabla of Grove City and Lisa Sloan of Harmony; four
nieces and two nephews. Ms. Sterrett was preceded in death by an infant
sister. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held
later this summer at the Mt. Irwin Cemetery, Venango County, outside of
Grove City. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the
Franklin Public Library, 421 12th St., Franklin, 16323; or the Grove
City Community Library, 125 W. Main St., Grove City, 16127.
James R. Tosh, 67, of New Bethlehem, died unexpectedly Thursday evening,
May 29, 2003, at Brookville Hospital. Born Aug. 6, 1935, in New
Bethlehem, he was a son of James M. and Catherine Oberly Tosh. Mr. Tosh
was of the Protestant faith. He was affiliated with New Bethlehem
Presbyterian Church. Mr. Tosh was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan. He is
survived by a sister, Barb Jacox of New Bethlehem; a sister-in-law,
Renny Tosh of New Bethlehem; four nieces, Julie McGuire and her husband,
David, of Fairmount City, Rhonda Jacox of San Diego, Calif.; Sherry
Taylor and her husband, Jeffrey, of Fairmount City, and Debra Jacox of
Pittsburgh; and two nephews, Wesley Tosh of Butler and Scott Tosh of
Knox. Also surviving are four great nieces and nephews, Nicole and
Jordan Tosh of Brookville, Shawn Adams of Denver, Colo., and Ian Taylor
of Fairmount City. Mr. Tosh was preceded in death by his parents and one
brother, Gerald Tosh. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. and 7 to 9
p.m. Sunday at the Rupert Funeral Home of New Bethlehem. Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the
Rev. Donald Hamilton, pastor of New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church,
officiating. Interment will follow at New Bethlehem Cemetery. The family
suggests memorial contributions be made to the New Bethlehem Public
Library.
Edward C. Weber, 69, of Harmony, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 28,
2003, at a hospital in Erie. Born Aug. 11, 1933, in Etna, he was a son
of the late Clark and Sara Weber. Mr. Weber attended St. John Lutheran
"Stone" Church in Lancaster Township, Butler County. He had been working
part-time with Executive Fleet in Butler. Mr. Weber was married June 20,
1953, to the former Evelyn Musser, who survives. Also surviving are two
daughters, Mrs. Duane (Kathy) Duda of Erie and Mrs. David (Karen) Rybak
of Oil City; one son, Frank Weber of Grove City; and three brothers,
James Weber of Butler, Art Weber of Etna and Harry Weber of Butler. Also
surviving are five grandchildren. Mr. Weber was preceded in death by a
son and a great-granddaughter. There will be no visitation. A memorial
service will be held at 4 p.m. today at St. John Lutheran "Stone"
Church, Stone Church Road, Lancaster Township, Butler County, with the
Rev. Robert F. Zimmerman, pastor of the church, officiating. In lieu of
flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. John
Lutheran "Stone" Church, Stone Church Road, Harmony, 16037. The Boylan
Funeral Home Inc. of Zelienople is in charge of arrangements.
Florence Whitmer, 79, of Luther Place, Oil City, died at 6:45 a.m.
Friday, May 30, 2003, at The Caring Place, Franklin. Born April 21,
1924, in Franklin, she was the daughter of Floyd Whitmer and Mary Emma
Botts. Ms. Whitmer worked for Miller Equipment, was a cook for Polk
Center and worked at several other local establishments. She enjoyed
animals, cooking for her family and friends, and playing bingo. Ms.
Whitmer is survived by four nephews, Michael Bresowski and his wife,
Margie, of Seneca, Richard Flinchbaugh of Seneca, William Flinchbaugh of
Seneca and Robert Whitmer and his wife, Mary, of Cherrytree; one niece,
Virginia Carlene Whitmer of Dempseytown; several great nieces and
nephews; and two dear friends, Marcella "Bobbie" Bittenbender of Oil
City and Mary Saba of Grove City. She was preceded in death by her
parents; four sisters, Ethel Johnson, Flora Bell Bresowski, Mary Jane
Whitmer and Pauline Flinchbaugh; and one brother, Carl Whitmer. There
will be no visitation or services. The family suggests memorial
contributions be made to the Venango County Humane Society or a charity
of one's choice. The Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home of Franklin is in
charge of arrangements.
