Henry Leland Allaman, 87, of Shippenville, died Monday, June 23, 2003,
in Clarion Hospital. Born Nov. 30, 1915, in Elk Township, Clarion
County, he was the son of John Webster and Minerva C. Dahle Allaman. Mr.
Allaman was a farmer all of his life. He was a member of Grace Lutheran
Church in Clarion. Mr. Allaman first was married to Susan E. Taylor, who
died in 1973. He then was married to Betty M. McCormick, who died in
1996. Surviving are a daughter, Judith Allaman of New Bethlehem; four
stepdaughters, Ms. Donna Fraizer of Watauga, Texas, Diana Sutherland and
husband, Dan, of Saltsburg; Deborah Pierce and husband, Harry, of West
Lebanon and Sharon White and husband, Ron, of Baltimore, Md.; three
stepsons and their wives, Earl and Joan McCormick of Ruther Glen, Va.,
George Emil and Debbie McCormick of Mishawaka, Ind., and Daren and
Andrea McCormick of Pittsburgh; 19 grandchildren; and 29
great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wives, he was
preceded in death by a stepson, Harold L. McCormick Jr.; and one
granddaughter, Molenda A. Howard. Visitation will be held from noon to 2
and 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Goble Funeral Home of Clarion. Funeral
services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the
Rev. Harold O. Jacobson officiating. Interment will follow in
Shippenville Cemetery.
Mabelle G. Chadman, 91, formerly of the Knox area, died at 9:22 p.m.
Saturday, June 21, 2003, in Allen Dale Assisted Living, Newton Falls,
Ohio, where she had resided for the past 10 years. Born May 30, 1912, in
Beaver Township, Clarion County, she was the daughter of Samuel and
Bertha Irene Neely Rowe. Mrs. Chadman was a member of St. Paul Lutheran
Church at Knox RD 2, the Parker Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and
the Golden Rule Club. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and crafts. Mrs.
Chadman was married April 10, 1929, to Sylvester Leonard Chadman, who
died March 7, 1986. Surviving are a son and his wife, Stanley and
Margaret Chadman of Newton Falls, Ohio; one daughter, Mrs. Daryl (Lois)
Myers of Lawrenceville, Ga.; eight grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs.
Chadman was preceded in death by a son, Edward Chadman, March 21, 2001;
and two brothers, Laird Rowe and Frank Rowe. Friends may call from 9 to
11 a.m. Wednesday in the William N. Rupert Mortuary, Knox. Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the
Rev. Christina LaLonde, pastor of Braceville United Methodist Church in
Newton Falls, Ohio, officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul Union
Cemetery, Knox RD 2.
Irene Lepley Koch Emery, 84, of Shreffler Road, Emlenton, Richland
Township, Venango County, died at 6:10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, in
UPMC Northwest, Franklin. Born July 15, 1918, in Franklin, she was the
daughter of Roy E. and Mabel Mae Mangel Lepley. She was a 1936 graduate
of Emlenton High School. Mrs. Emery was a member of the Emlenton United
Methodist Church, the Emlenton Civic Club and Daughters of the American
Colonists. She also was a member and regent of Fort Venango Chapter DAR,
and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Parker. She enjoyed
researching family history, collecting salt and pepper shakers and the
company of her dog, Ginger. She first was married July 10, 1936, to
Dienard D. Koch, who died July 5, 1956. She then was married Sept. 25,
1957, to Ralph Emery Jr., who died Nov. 11, 1979. Surviving are three
children and their spouses, Anna Mae and Russell Rinker of Franklin,
Rose Marie and John Ritchey of Emlenton and Dienard "Bud" and Verna Koch
of East Liverpool, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Randy Lemmon, Bonnie
Gilbert, Kathy Kaufman, Kelly Trimble, Karen Levy and Shane and Shannon
Koch; nine great-grandchildren, Spencer and Aaron Lemmon, Nicole
Schrecengost, John Kaufman, Karly Kaufman, Maria Levy and Tabitha,
Abigail and Michael Koch; two stepgrandchildren, DiAnne Wessell and
husband, Joe, and Daniel Rinker and wife, Sharyn; and two
step-great-grandchildren, Rob Rinker and Mande Edwards. Friends may call
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Christopher M. Hile Funeral
Home, Emlenton. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the
funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Duffee, pastor of the Emlenton United
Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Zion Union Cemetery,
Richland Township, Venango County. Memorials may be made to the Emlenton
Area Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 346, Emlenton, 16373.
Kay Johnson, 56, of Asheville, N.C., formerly of Franklin, died Oct. 18,
2002. Born Aug. 7, 1946, in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late
Paul R. Johnson of Reno and Jane Johnson of Roanoke, Va. She was a 1964
graduate of Rocky Grove High School. Ms. Johnson attended nursing school
in Erie from 1964 to 1967 and entered the Army Nurse Corps in February
1968. She served in Vietnam from October 1968 to October 1969. She
worked as a registered nurse in hospitals in Columbia, S.C., Oak Ridge,
Tenn., and Knoxville, Tenn. She later worked in home health care in St.
Petersburg, Fla., and Asheville, N.C., until 2000. Ms. Johnson attended
the Unity Church in Florida and the Jubilee Church in Asheville, N.C.
She was married to Craig Burnette from 1971 to 1989. Surviving are one
son, Joshua Craig Burnette of Greensboro, N.C.; and one daughter, Erica
Kay Tarplay of Lenoir City, Tenn. She also is survived by one sister,
Judy Deslatte of Colorado; and two brothers, Bill Johnson of Colorado
and Jeff Johnson of North Carolina. A military funeral was conducted
Oct. 20, 2002, in Asheville, N.C.
Lloyd E. "Joe" Johnston, 67, of Huey, died at 4:09 a.m. Monday, June 23,
2003, in the emergency room of Clarion Hospital. Born Oct. 6, 1935, in
Huey, he was the son of C. Eugene and Cecil Mae Bowser Johnston. He was
a Korean War veteran, serving in the United States Marine Corps. Mr.
Johnston worked in the limestone mines most of his life and retired in
1997 from C&C Limestone of Boyers. He was a member of the New Athens
Church of God of Prophecy near Rimersburg. Mr. Johnston was a life
member of VFW Post No. 7132 of Rimersburg. He enjoyed hunting, fishing
and camping. Mr. Johnston was married June 1, 1957, to Dorothy "Tootie"
Curry, who died May 11, 2003. Surviving are a daughter and her husband,
Cathy M. and Matt Klingensmith of Virginia Beach, Va.; five sons, Joseph
H. Johnston and wife, Karen, of New Bethlehem, Scott E. Johnston and
wife, Gloria, and Ronald E. Johnston and wife, Cathy, all of Rimersburg,
Lloyd Ray Johnston of Titusville, Fla., and Roy James Johnston and wife,
Cindy, of Parker; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He
also is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Dick (Betty J.) Wiser of Sligo and
Mrs. John (Phyllis C.) Johnson of Rimersburg. In addition to his parents
and wife, Mr. Johnston was preceded in death buy two sisters, Twila M.
Shirey and Shirley A. Ramsey. The family will receive friends from 2 to
4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Varner Funeral Home, Sligo. Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with the
Rev. Leonard Goughler, pastor of the New Athens Church of God of
Prophecy near Rimersburg, officiating. Interment will follow in Sligo
Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the ceremonial squads
of Shearer-Schick American Legion Post and the VFW Post 7132, both of
Rimersburg. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the
Southern Clarion County Ambulance Service, Route 68, Rimersburg, 16248,
or to the American Diabetes Association.
Cora Phinney Simon, 87, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, in Venice, Fla.,
where she resided. She relocated to Florida in 1966 from Franklin, where
she had been married to Harold W. Eakin. They were the parents of three
children, Kathryn and husband, Gordon R. Miller of Meadville, Dr. James
R. Eakin of Laconia, N.H., and a twin son who died in infancy. She was
born May 23, 1916, in Dunkirk, N.Y., a daughter of Josephine and Willis
W. Phinney. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Aaron
Phinney; and a sister, Marian Beith. She is survived by her
brother-in-law, Richard Beith of Franklin; a nephew, Rick Beith of
Franklin; and a niece, Nancy Walker of Calverville, Tenn. She married
John Edward Simon, now deceased, in 1979. Surviving are a sister-in-law,
Kate Haller McVicker of Venice, Fla.; four grandchildren, Christopher
Miller of Denver, Colo., Mitchell Eakin and Mrs. Chris (Brooke) Geary of
Concord, N.H., and Colin Eakin of Orlando, Fla.; Jim's former wife,
Annette Eakin of Concord, N.H.; and a friend, Cynthia Curtis. In the
past several months, she fought physical adversities. She was a
registered nurse and enjoyed her profession. She worked in Sarasota
Memorial Hospital for several years before retiring in 1979. She was a
deacon and regular worshiper at Venice Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed
playing bridge, traveling to be with her family and spending summers in
New England. Memorials may be made to a charity of a donor's choice or
to Christ Episcopal Church, 870 Diamond Park, Meadville, 16335 Burial
and a private family service will be under the direction of Huff Chapel,
312 W. Park St., Franklin, at 11 a.m. Aug. 16. A memorial service for
friends and family in Florida will be held at a later date.
Russell M. Smith, 96, of Tionesta, died Monday, June 23, 2003, in
Titusville Area Hospital. Born Aug. 7, 1906, in Milton, Pa., he was the
eldest son of Maynard and Annie Cotner Smith. On Aug. 24, 1929, he
married Grace Catherine Kostenbauder, who died Sept. 13, 1987. He was
employed by Penn State Cooperative Extension and was the Forest County
Agricultural Agent from 1929 to 1968 when he retired after 39 years of
service. Mr. Smith graduated in 1924 from Potts Grove High School,
Northumberland County. He received his bachelor of science degree in
agriculture in 1929 from Penn State. He was a member of Alpha Zeta, a
national agricultural fraternity, at Penn State. He did graduate work in
1941 at Cornell University and in 1960 at the University of Georgia. He
was past master of Olive Lodge 557, F.&A.M. of Tionesta, a member of the
Venango Lodge of Perfection and the Coudersport Consistory. He was a
chartering member of the Tionesta Lions Club, which was organized in
1939, and had been a member of the Forest Grange for several years. He
was an ordained elder of the Tionesta Presbyterian Church in 1939, and
served as clerk of session, Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He
had served as president, treasurer and secretary of the Forest County
Sunday School Association. Mr. Smith served as a director of the
Tionesta Borough School District in 1939 and later served as president
of the Forest Area School District. From 1966 to 1983 he was a member of
the Forest County Planning Commission where he served as
secretary/treasurer. He also served as secretary for the Tionesta
Recreation Board from 1966 to 1988. In his later years he continued to
be as active as he could in community affairs and functions, as well as
church activities, with the purpose of serving the people of the
Tionesta area. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in
death by two brothers, Walter C. and Alvin G. Smith, and a sister in
infancy. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Jean Hartman and her
husband, Joe, of Kutztown, and Sylvia Jane Korona and her husband,
Robert, of Martinsburg, Pa.; one son, John R. Smith and his wife, Ruth,
of Kettering, Ohio.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Norman J.
Wimer Funeral Home of Tionesta and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the
Tionesta Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Thursday in the church with the Rev. Peter Veltman, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in McEwensville Cemetery, McEwensville, Northumberland
County. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart
Association or to the Tionesta Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
Clarence B. "Strick" Strickland, 81, died at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, June 22,
2003, in Beverly Healthcare-Titusville, where he had been a resident
since June 1999. Born Aug. 10, 1921, in Oxford, Pa., he was the son of
the late Clyde E. and Ethel Barber Strickland. Mr. Strickland was a
veteran of World War II having been inducted into the U.S. Army Sept.
28, 1942. He served in Guadacanal, New Guinea, Bogganville and the
Philippines. He was discharged at Indiantown Gap Oct. 22, 1945, after
attaining sergeant. He married the former Therese Madden Oct. 2, 1946,
in Lancaster. She died Oct. 21, 1976. Mr. Strickland worked as a
machinist for Struthers-Wells Corp. until its closing. He later worked
for 28 years at Universal Cyclops Specialty Steel until his retirement
in 1983. Mr. Strickland attended St. Titus Church. He was a member of
the Cyclops Quarter Century Club. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed hunting
and was a sports fan especially of any Pittsburgh sports teams.
Survivors include a son, Thomas L. Strickland and his wife, Cynthia, of
Titusville; three daughters, Karen Toriski and her husband, John, of
Titusville, Jane Thorne and her husband, Paul, of Silver Spring, Md.,
and Carole Panas and her husband, Richard, of Pittsburgh; a son-in-law,
Forrest McQuown, of Titusville: two brothers, William Strickland of
Salem, N.J., and Roman Strickland of Biloxi, Miss.; 11 grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr.
Strickland was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Ann McQuown and a
brother, George Strickland. Relatives and friends will be received from
2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Leo N. Hennes Funeral Home, Inc.,
203 E. Main St., Titusville. A Christian Wake Service will be conducted
at 8:45 p.m. today. A transfer service will be held at 9:30 a.m.
Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at
10 a.m. at St. Titus Church with the Rev. V. David Foradori, pastor,
presiding. Interment will be in St. Catharine's Cemetery, Titusville.

Healthcare, 81 Dillon Dr., Titusville, 16354.
Violet L. VanDyke, 86, of 1722 Biebel Ave., Erie, died Sunday, June 22,
2003, in Hamot Medical Center, Erie. Born March 2, 1917, in Oil City,
she was the daughter of Albert and Pearl Lobaugh Marchinke. Mrs. VanDyke
had been employed in food services for the Millcreek School District.
She was a member of Perkins Presbyterian Church, Erie, where she was a
member of the Pilgrim Group and also was active in the Food Pantry. Mrs.
VanDyke was an avid reader. She was married to Ray E. VanDyke, who
preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Kathryn
and Philip Hirsch of Girard; two sons and their wives, William and
Shirley VanDyke and Richard and Helen VanDyke, all of Erie; and six
grandchildren, Stacey, Denise, Jennifer, Richard, Keith and Megan; and
four great-grandchildren, Tyler Dustin, Breanna and Adin. She also is
survived by a close cousin, Joan Baum and husband, Ken, of Erie. In
addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. VanDyke was preceded in death
by a granddaughter, Debra. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Wednesday in the Burton Funeral Home, 602 W. 10th St., Erie. Services
will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. Paul
Doriani officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens,
Cranberry. Memorials may be made to the Pilgrim Group at Perkins
Presbyterian Church, 5440 Washington Ave., Erie, 16509.
Charlotte Wheeler, 59, of Emlenton, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, of
injuries sustained in a three-vehicle accident on the Eighth Street
Bridge, Franklin. The H. Jack Buzard Funeral Home in Eau Claire is in
charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published Wednesday
in The Derrick.

Richard M. 'Dick' Ryberg World War II veteran, J&L Steel welder ST.
PETERSBURG - Richard M. "Dick" Ryberg 84, of Keating Street , St.
Petersburg , died unexpectedly late Friday night, June 20, 2003 at his
residence. Born June 14, 1919 in St. Petersburg , he was the son of
Morris Ryberg and Florence Ashbaugh Ryberg Shingledecker. He was married
June 29, 1940 , in St. Petersburg , to Helen Dee Ryberg, who died
October 22, 1997 . Mr. Ryberg was a graduate of St. Petersburg-Richland
High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Ryberg had
been employed in his early years by the Pennsylvania Railroad, working
in Parker and Foxburg. He spent most of his working life as a welder at
J&L Steel in Oil City . He had been a member of St. Peter Evangelical
Reformed Church in St. Petersburg and later attended Emlenton
Presbyterian Church. Mr. Ryberg was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member
for than 50 years of Canby Masonic Lodge No. 520, F&AM of St. Petersburg
, and was a member of Consistory, Valley of New Castle . He enjoyed
being with his family, hunting, fishing and woodworking. Surviving are
two daughters and their husbands, Rebecca R. and John C. Beham of Erie
and Carole J. and Larry Lentz of Greenville; four grandchildren, Joshua
C. Lentz and wife, Michelle, of Butler , Lee R. Lentz and wife, Aryn, of
Camp Hill, Jenny R. Kanoza and Sarah E. Beham, both of Erie; and three
great-grandsons, Owen and Emmett Lentz of Camp Hill and Jonah Lentz of
Butler. Friends were received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 23 in the
Christopher M. Hile Funeral Home in St. Petersburg . Friends will be
received from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday (today), June 24, in the funeral
home. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
The Rev. Phillip Chalfant, pastor of the Coolspring Presbyterian Church,
will officiate. Interment will be in St. Petersburg Cemetery . Memorial

2003 , in Grove Manor, Grove City , after an extended illness. Among her

Rimersburg, wife of Howard E. Lamont, died at 12:40 p.m. Saturday June

RIMERSBURG - Cora Mae (Anthony) Priester 66, widow of Joseph Henry
Priester, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2003 , at the home of her
son, Joseph Priester, in East Brady.
