Arnold Mead "Goog" Bowser Sr., 82, of 1637 Rider Road, Rimersburg, died
at 2:49 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2003, in Butler Memorial Hospital
following a short illness. Born May 31, 1921, in New Athens, he was the
son of William Dale and Minerva Reed Bowser. Mr. Bowser was a veteran of
World War II and served in Normandy, northern France and in the
Rhineland. He received numerous decorations and citations including the
Purple Heart. In his early years, Mr. Bowser was employed as a coal
miner at the Davis Cooki Co. in Rimersburg, and then in the dietetics
department of the Butler Veterans' Administration Medical Center for 27
years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Shearer-Shiek American
Legion Post 454 and the VFW Post 7132. He was a Protestant and the last
surviving member of a family of 13 children. He enjoyed woodworking,
lawn work, hunting, riding four-wheelers and spending time with his
family. Mr. Bowser was married Feb. 15, 1944, to the former June
Summerville, who survives. They had been married 59 years. Also
surviving are two sons, Arnold Bowser Jr. and Daniel Bowser, and his
wife Pixie, all of Rimersburg; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Sue) McElree of
Shippenville; two grandsons, Michael Buzard, and his wife Susan, of
Route 208, Tionesta, and Douglas McElree of Pittsburgh; three
step-grandchildren, Scott McNaughton and Timothy McNaughton, both of
Rimersburg, and Travis McNaughton of Yuma, Ariz.; a great-grandson,
Shane Buzard of Route 218, Tionesta; and many nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by five brothers, Clarence, Walter, John, William and
Milton Bowser; and seven sisters, Mable Guntrum, Minnie Yates, Bessie
Ramsey, Melva Rankin, Ruth Steele, and twin sisters, Verda Bowser and
Verna Bowser. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the
Varner Funeral Home of Rimersburg. Funeral services will be 11 a.m.
Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Deeter, pastor of the
Rimersburg Wesleyan Methodist Church, officiating. Interment with full
military honors accorded by ceremonial squads of the Shearer-Shiek
American Legion and VFW Post 7132 of Rimersburg will follow in the
Rimersburg Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to a
charity of the donor's choice.
Richard F. "Dick" Krear, 51, of Richland Township, Emlenton, died at
2:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon at UPMC Northwest, Franklin, following an
extended illness. Born July 31, 1951, in Oil City, he was a son of
Richard F. Krear Sr. and Beatrice Anderson Krear. He was a 1969 graduate
of Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School and also attended Slippery Rock
State College. Mr. Krear was self-employed in various endeavors in the
Emlenton area including ownership of the Red Tail Eco Tours. He
particpated in many local environmental programs and was the river
keeper along the Allegheny River. A master falconer, he was a member of
the Pennsylvania and National Falconer associations. He also taught
survival courses at Slippery Rock University. He was a member of the
French Creek Watershed Project and a member of the River Keepers
Association. Surviving are a daughter, Sarah Krear at home; two sons,
Matthew Krear of Parker and Rodney Krear at home; a grandson, Jordan
tanner Krear of Parker; a sister, Mrs. Steve (Ginny) Chiappini of West
Sunbury; and three nieces of West Sunbury. Friends may call from 2 to 4
and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the H. Jack Buzard Funeral Home, Wayne Street,
Parker. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral
home with the Rev. Jack Robinson of the Church of the Nazarene in St.
Petersburg officiating. Private interment will be held at the
convenience of the family. The family suggests that memorial donations
be sent in lieu of flowers to the French Creek Water Shed Project, in
care of Brian Hill at (814) 336-3584.
Irene G. Roche, 85, of Oil City, died at 8:30 a.m. Friday, June 27,
2003, in Oil City Presbyterian Home. Born Dec. 5. 1917, in Oil City, she
was a daughter of the late Francis and Sarah Cauvel Huff. She lived in
the Oil City area all of her life and was valedictorian of the Oil City
High School Class of 1933. She was a homemaker and a mother. Mrs. Roche
attended Oakland United Methodist Church in Dempseytown, where she
served as a Bible school teacher. She was also a 4-H leader and a member
of the Dempseytown area grange. She had an extensive doll collection,
was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, especially of the Pirates, and
enjoyed quilting, gardening, and spending time with her family and
friends and especially her grandchildren. She was married Aug. 30, 1940,
in Oil City, to William W. Roche, who preceded her in death July 20,
1998. Surviving are two sons, John N. Roche of Greenville and Dennis L.
Roche and his wife, Sheila, of Oil City; two daughters, Roseanne Roche
McCranny and her husband, Richard, of Toledo, Ohio, and Connie Flynn and
her husband, Richard, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; eight grandchildren,
Dale Roche and Raegan Roche of Oil City, Michael Roche of Cortland,
Ohio, Catherine Wallace and her husband, Mark, of Lafayette, La., Sarah
McCranny and Kevin McCranny of Toledo, Ohio, and Wayne Flynn and Tony
Flynn of California. Also surviving are two step-grandchildren, Dianne
Harkless of Oil City and Karen Harkless of Franklin; three
great-grandchildren, Matthew Wallace of Lafayette, La., and Libby Roche
and Andy Roche of Cortland, Ohio; a step-great-grandson, Jacob Umstead
of Franklin; a sister, Audrey Henderson and her husband, Ray, of Oil
City; two brothers, Charles Huff and his wife, Edwina, of Rocky Grove,
and Willis Huff and his wife, Carolyn, of Titusville; and several nieces
and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in
death by a daughter-in-law, Virginia M. Roche; two brothers, Francis
Huff and John Huff; a sister, Ruth Nicol; and a sister-in-law, Alice
Huff. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the
Osenider Funeral Home, 15 W. First St. Funeral services will be held at
11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Interment will be in Lamey
Cemetery, Oakland Township. The family suggests memorial donations be
made to the Oakland United Methodist Church, Dempseytown.
Harding C. Shaw, 81, of 2734 Route 417, Franklin, died at 12:07 a.m.
Friday, June 27, 2003, at UPMC Northwest. Born Nov. 1, 1921, in
Clintonville, he was the son of William and Lourilla (Donaldson) Shaw.
Mr. Shaw was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a construction
foreman for Oil Well Supply for 18 years and also worked as a builder
for Howard Fisher and Bert Kiskadden. He was a member of Bethel United
Methodist Church. He loved golf, baseball and all sports. He also loved
the outdoors, walking in the woods and gardening. Mr. Shaw was married
April 21, 1944, to the former Betty Branan, who survives. Also surviving
are four children, Roger Shaw of Titusville, Dennis Shaw of Woodbury,
Minn., Mrs. John (Judy) Miller of Hazelton, and Mrs. Charles (Carol)
Cutchall of Franklin; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Henry, William and Norman
Shaw; and a sister, Vista Hutchison. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7
to 9 p.m. Saturday at Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home, Franklin.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bethel United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Martin of Bethel United Methodist
Church officiating. Assisting will be Lloyd Shaw, retired Presbyterian
minister and nephew of Mr. Shaw. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery.
Memorials are to Bethel United Methodist Church.
Alta J. Snyder, 75, of Naulton Road, Curwensville, died Thursday, June
26, 2003, at the Presbyterian Home in Oil City after a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 13, 1927, in Howard, she was a daughter of LeRoy and Minnie
Weaver Laird. Mrs. Snyder had been employed as a seamstress for
MacGregor Sportswear in Clearfield, the Clearfield Home Health Agency,
and most recently, along with her husband, Lyle, at the Oil Creek Family
Campground in Titusville. She was also a homemaker. Mrs. Snyder was of
the United Methodist faith and was a member and twice worthy matron of
Chapter 379, Order of the Eastern Star of Clearfield. She was also a
member and past president of the Curwensville Business and Professional
Woman's Club. She was married July 3, 1948, in Kane to Lyle H. Snyder,
who survives. Survivors also include five children, Dale R. Snyder of
Baker, Fla., Faith Daniels and her husband, Carl, of Glen Richey, Keith
Snyder of Curwensville, Vicki Frankovich and her husband, Bob, of
Smithmill, and Lesa R. Lingle of Clearfield. Also surviving are 12
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters and two
brothers, Joyce Dempsey and her husband, Harland, of Ashville, N.C.,
Robert Laird and his wife, Jackie, of Concrete, Wash., Lois Dempsey and
her husband, Jim, of Ridgway, and Richard Laird of Orlando, Fla. In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bud
Laird; a great-granddaughter, Kendris Smith; a nephew, Terry Dempsey;
and a great-nephew, Joseph Dempsey. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7
to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Chester C. Chidboy
Funeral Home, 300 State St., Curwensville. Funeral services will be held
at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Timothy Young
officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Curwensville. The
family suggests memorial contributions be made to Curwensville Public
Library for large print books, 601 Beech St., Curwensville, 16833.
Norman Daniel "Danny" Walters, 66, of 4071/2 W. Fifth St., Oil City,
died unexpectedly at his home late Wednesday, June 25, 2003. Born Sept.
12, 1936, in Newmansville, he was a son of the late Andrew and Georgetta
Fox Walters. He attended schools in Newmansville and Lickingville. Mr.
Walters was disabled for a number of years, and he previously worked at
Riverside Tire, Cubbon Lumber and Sylvania. Mr. Walters was of the
Protestant faith. He enjoyed fishing and camping. Surviving are three
children, Norman F. Walters and his wife, Brenda, and Floyd Walters, all
of Pasadena, Md., and Lester Walters of Cold Springs, Texas; two
grandchildren, Stacy and Jessica Walters of Pasadena, Md.; and three
brothers, Alfred Walters of Newmansville and Eugene Walters and Andrew
Walters, both of Oil City. He was preceded in death by a half-sister;
two half-brothers; and a brother, Lawrence Walters. Friends may call
from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday in the Reinsel Funeral Home, 116 Bissell Ave.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with
the Rev. Jack R. Friggle, associate pastor emeritus of Grace United
Methodist Church officiating. Interment of his cremains at Walters
Cemetery in Newmansville and will take place at the convenience of the
family. The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of one's
choice.
Barbara A. Winger, 70, of 133 Black Run Road, Grove City, died of an
extended illness at 12:20 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003, at her
daughter's residence, where she had lived since September. Born April 5,
1933, in Moulton Iowa, she was the daughter of Harlan J. and Leah Ethel
(Wendland) Carr. She retired in 1998 after 23 years as a chef at the
Grove City Country Club. She was a member of Covenant Orthodox
Presbyterian Church, Grove City. She enjoyed bowling as a hobby.
Surviving are three children, Terry L. Johnson of Atlanta, Jennifer
Covert, and her husband, Doug, of Grove City, and Barbara J. McFadden of
Reno; four sisters, Helen Harris of Bloomifield, Iowa, Mary Crow of Des
Moines, Iowa, Betty Cairns of Louisville, Ky., and Jeanette Palmer of El
Paso, Texas; two brothers, John Carr of Anadarko, Okla., and Mack Carr
of Des Moines, Iowa; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by three sisters, Mildred Carr, Romaine Heither and Deloris Carr; and
three brothers, Luke, Ralph and Rex Carr. Friends may call from 7 to 9
p.m. Sunday and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Cunningham Funeral Home Inc.,
Grove City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the
funeral home with the Rev. Gerald Dodds of Covenant Orthodox
Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial
Park, Grove City.
