Subject: [PACLEARF] Clearfield Republican Friday 12 July 1901 (Part 1)
Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2000 23:15:55 -0500
I recently acquired the Clearfield Republican, issues for mid July 1901
through June 1902 and will try to post items of interest to the list.
Friday 12 July 1901
David SACKETT, George N. MARKLE, Don SHOWERS, Verd THOMPSON, Newt SHUGART
and other Clearfield boys who went to the Philippines two years ago in the
volunteer regiment are expected home to-day.
Frank BILGER, the son of George A. BILGER, of Bloom township, met with a
serious accident at the Whittaker quarry on Monday of this week. The sweep
of a derrick struck him across the legs, breaking both of them.
Struck by Lightning
The residence of George M. BILGER, on Market Street, was struck by lightning
at about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 1901. It struck the flue in the
centre of the house, demolished the two terra cotta tops and a part of the
brick work, tore a large whole in the roof, blew out the cement which was
used to close the stove pipe openings and filled the house with soot and
debris. Several persons were on the front porch and Mrs. BILGER and little
daughter, Nellie, were upstairs, but fortunately no one was inured by the
shock.
Champion Potato Raiser
Richard J. CONKLIN, who resides just outside the third ward in Lawrence, is
the champion early potato raiser in this neighborhood. On Saturday, June
29, he brought in a good sized sample of his skill in this direction in the
shape of sufficient tubers for several meals. They were of the Rural New
Yorkers variety and far surpass in flavor, size and solidity the potatos
brought in from the south. We have not heard of any other gardeners coming
anywhere near Mr. CONKLIN's record this year.
Touring Europe
Albert B. KERR, eldest son of Hon. James Kerr, Joseph PATTON, son of Hon.
A.E. Patton, Curwensville, and C.A. WEYMOUTH of Lock Haven, left New York
last Saturday for a trip through England, Ireland, Scotland, Belgium,
Holland, Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy. They will be absent about
two months.
July Weddings
CODER - JOHNSON
A very pleasant time was had on July 4, 1901 at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
John CODER, near Belsena. Their married daughters, four in number, with
their husbands and children had come to enjoy the day and the occasion was
the marriage of their youngest daughter, Miss Bessie, to Mr. Harry JOHNSON,
of Madera, Rev. R. G. Williams tying the knot. Then followed the usual
congratulations and rich repast. May their future be bright and happy as
the day was bright and historic.
KENNARD - MORGAN
Ernest Leslie KENNARD and Miss Anna MORGAN, both of Clearfield were united
in marriage at St. Francis' Catholic Church yesterday morning at 7 o'clock
by Rev. Father Cavanaugh in the presence of a limited number of near
relatives and friends. They will go to housekeeping on Walnut Street. The
Republican joins with the many friends of the young couple in wishing them
an abundance of happiness, a long and useful life.
STRAW - STEVENS
On Wednesday, June 27, 1901 at high noon, W.N. STRAW of Clearfield and Miss
Caroline STEVENS, of Gazzam, were united in marriage at the home of the
groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William STRAW, near Berwindale. Rev. Rishel
was the officiating minister. The happy couple will go to housekeeping in
Clearfield.
