Passed Over the River
Killed at O'Shanter
William PATTERSON, a young miner, residing in Lawrence Township, near the
P.R.R. bridge over Clearfield creek, was killed on the railroad near
O'Shanter, July 4. He was on his way to visit his uncle residing in
O'Shanter and was walking on the track when he was run down. The young man
was well known in Clearfield and was very popular. He was a member of Glen
Richey Lodge, K. of P. which organization had charge of the funeral which
took place Sunday. Interment at Bloomington.
BUTLER
Mrs. Margaret BUTLER, for many years a resident of Clearfield, died at the
residence of her granddaughter, Mrs. Robert HUSTON, in the East End on July
4, 1901, aged 85 years. Deceased was the widow of __________ BUTLER and
lived in this neighborhood for over half a century. Left a widow many years
ago she supported herself and her younger children of her family by hard
work. When her children grew up they tried to induce her to rest from the
labors but she refused and continued until a few months ago to perform her
regular labors about the offices of town and other tasks she had been
accustomed to for years. She was a remarkably kind woman whose home was
always open to her friends. She is survived by her sons John D., of the
third ward, and George, of Winburne. The funeral was held Saturday, July 6.
Rev. D. B. Treibly conducting the services.
(NOTE: This lady was my ggg grandmother and she was married to Robert
Butler.)
SHARBAUGH
John SHARBAUGH, father of Andrew J. SHARBAUGH of this place died at his home
in Carrolltown, Cambria Co., Sunday, June 30, 1901, aged 75 years. Mr.
SHARBAUGH was one of the leading citizens of that end of Cambria and was
highly esteemed. He was a cabinet maker and undertaker by trade. A
lifelong consistent member of the Catholic church and a staunch Democrat.
He is survived by his wife, several sons and daughters. The funeral took
place Tuesday, July 2, interment in Carrolltown.
Memorial Service
A brief memorial services in memory of W.J. MULLEN, deceased, was held in
the Glen Hope M.E. Church Sunday, June 30, 1901. Five persons made short
addresses appreciative of our departed brother. Mr. MULLEN was born in
Armagh County Ireland in October, 1836 and died in Glen Hope, very suddenly
of neuralgia of the heart, June 25, 1901. He was buried at Haggerty's Cross
Roads Friday, June 28, a remarkably large number of persons attended the
funeral.
For 46 years William J. MULLEN has been a member of the Glen Hope M.E.
Church and has served well in all the offices in the church. He uniformly
manifested his high appreciation of the church by the careful manner in
which he looked after the little repairs that were needed to make the church
comfortable; by his remarkable regularity in attendance upon the church
services and by his readiness to take part in those services. Through his
departure the community loses a valuable citizen and the church a strong
pillar. We mourn for him as for our brother but are consoled that our loss
is his gain.
Killed near Coalport
Peter A. ROWLES, a deaf mute, son of George W. ROWLES of Blain City was
killed on the P. & N.W. railroad near the coke ovens on July 4. He was on
his way home and was walking down the track when struck by a special train
running to Mariposa Park. He was aged 30 years.
Strange to say, his bosom friend, a deaf mute, named Weld, was killed at the
same place and in the same manner a couple of years ago.
