Doey - there are several ways to go about interviewing - depending on what
you want. The first thing is to have a good tape recorder and enough blank
tapes, the longer they tape the better. Do get permission to tape. Put
tape in obscure place, but close enough that changing tape will not distract
or interrupt flow. Have a notebook and pencil ready for yourself to take
short notes of statements about which you may want to ask questions later.
If you don't have all the raw data - say, parents names, sibs, birthplaces,
etc. Then get that vitae before going to other things.
There is a technique in which you ask the person an initial question - say,
"Tell me about the house you lived in when you were a child?" Then get out
of the way. Allow your interviewee to talk as much as they want without
interrupting - when they seem to be finished - ask a question from something
they have said about where they lived, the house, an event that happened, a
person or persons they have mentioned, what the relationships were.
This technique allows the person you are interviewing to set the tone - they
will talk about the things they are or have been interested in and thus, have
taken note of, either consciously or unconsciously, all their lives. You
will get a richer picture, because 1) they are interested, and 2) their
knowledge and memory will be greater in the areas of their own interests.
You can go back later, and pick out the main thread. And be prepared - it
isn't always a stated interest.
Try this url for other suggestions and for records you might want to keep
about your interviews.

Good Luck - and please keep me posted how it's going. I'm very interested in
this kind of endeavor.
