I have found two newspaper articles that refer to a James Curley of
Clearfield County, PA. Can anyone tell me where I may find out more about this
James Curley and his incarceration in the penitentiary. Also, more about
the murder that occurred? Was this James Curley ever arrested, tried and
convicted?

This article concerns the burning of a barn allegedly started by one
James Curley. The article states that "James Curley, whom our readers will
remember was sent to the penitentiary from this county a few years
ago....." What was the Penitentiary and where was it located. Who may now have
the old records of Incarceration?

This article concerns a $500.00 dollar reward for information leading
to the arrest and conviction of one James Curley for the murder of Barltey
Eagan, of Karthaus township, who was found dead on the evening of the 1st
day of August, in the public high-way in said township.
The reason that I wish to know more about the James CURLEY named in
the newspapers is that about 27 September 1870, the mother of James Carley's
children, had Guardians appointed for his five children. The Orphans Court
records show the spelling of the children's surnames to be CURLEY.
My wife's ancestor was James CARLEY who lived in Karthaus Township,
Clearfield County, Pennsylvania and is found there in the 1850 and 1860
census records. His DOB is unknown. From the census records I assume that he
was born between 1802 - 1804, possibly in PA. Two of his five Children
reported that he was born in Maine? We know that James died prior to the 1870
census as his wife was administrating his estate in 1869. His wife was
Melinda (Cramer) Carley of Potter Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania.
