I have several of the Orange & Purple student handbooks. I thought some
of you who do not have access to these would enjoy reading with me,
excerpts from these. (Please excuse any typing errors)

First of all, each student book started out with a list of the staff.
There was an "Editorial Page", a "Literary Page", " School Notes", with
info on all the classes and plenty of advertisers. The Editorial
usually was something that dealt with a lot of things. Sometimes it was
things that the school needed improved or more of. Other times, there
were comments about other "national" issues.
The Literary pages were filled with short stories composed by the
students and submitted for publication.
The School Notes were follow-up's and information about current and
graduated alumni. These "notes" were a chance to fill yourself with the
local gossip and find out how other graduates were doing. There were
marriages, births, new jobs and sad news about illness and deaths of
former students....

Orange & Purple, March, 1917
The "editorial" started pit with "One of the first essentials to being a
good soldier is obedience." It was clear in the article as it went on "
When we leave our Alma Mater, those of us who do not go to college enter
the ranks of industry, as privates. To become officers we must learn
how to perform the duties of an officer. We must follow his orders
strictly and thus will become acquainted with his duties.
During the past year the most mooted question in the United States has
been that of Preparedness."
The Literary Section was lighter, Walter Pennignton's Success. Walter,
the son of a poor farmer living in the farming district of New York.
His mother determined that he should have a good education, picked
Stanford university as the best place for Walter to go. This story
tells of the "trials and tribulations" of his success story to graduate.
