Janelle,
Haven't heard from you for some time. I sent your a note when you opened
your Web page, but perhaps you didn't receive itl I just saw your query
about John Alexander Brawley on National Surname Search (actually dated
today). I have his obituary in my grandmother's scrapbook, and thought you
might like to have it!
JOHN A.BRAWLEY Meadville, Pa. May 5, 1886
It becomes our duty to chronicle the death of John A. Brawley, which
occurred yesterday at his late home, Richburg, Allegheny County, N.Y. after
a long illness and severe suffering from that dreadful malady, Bright's
Disease. His serious physical condition has heretofore been noted in these
columns, and the announcement of his death did not come altogether
unexpected to his Meadville friends. Among those at his bedside were his
aged mother,(Jane Stewart Brawley) and his only sister Mrs. James Dickson
(Malvina Jane Brawley) of Woodcock Twp.
John Alexander Brawley was the eldest son of the late William R. Brawley,
and was born in Mead Twp. in the year 1834. When the oil excitement first
began, over a quarter of a century ago, in company with his brothers and
other relatives, he identified himself with the business of oil production,
and in that line he continued until ill health compelled him to retire.
Hence he may be regarded as one of the pioneer oil men, and had large
interests in both the upper and lower fields. A few months ago, realizing
that incurable disease had fastened itself upon him, he satisfactorily
arranged all earthly , and calmly awaited the end. John A. Brawley was one
of nature's noblemen, and the poor and distressed never appealed to him in
vain when assistance was needed. Possessed of great wealth, he quietly
dispensed his benefactions with a lavish hand, and was ever readdy to sooth
the sorrows of the unfortunate. The death of such a man is universally
regretted, and his memory is fondly cherished. Mr. Brawley was unmarried. He
was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and Lodge No. 408 of this city will
have charge of the obsequies here. The remains will arrive on train 3
tomorrow, and the funeral services will be held at the First M.E. Church,
Rev. A.C. Ellis and Rev. H.R. McClintock officiating. Interment will will be
made in Greendale Cemetary.
Hope to hear from you soon, Janelle, and as you asked, I have some
corrections for your web page. Fondly, Cousin Billie
