'Mike' McDonough Dies ; Well known County Chef

Joseph M. ( Mike ) McDonough, Sr., former assistant manager of the old
Saegertown Inn, who was known throughout the county as a chef, died early
Thursday morning at his home on Grant Street, Saegertown. He was 66.
"Mike," as he was known to patrons of the old inn, had been in falling
health for about six months.
He first came to Saegerstown when he was 15 and worked through summer vacation
as a bellboy at the hostelry. The next year, he returned to the community
and stayed for most of the remainder of his life.
>From bellboy, he was promoted to porter, then steward, office manager and
finally assistant manager of the Saegerstown Inn. He was associated with
the hotel for 34 years.
For 11 years, he and Mrs. McDonough served as cooks at the Phi Gamma Delta
fraternity house at Allegheny college. He also managed the Meadville Country
club for several years.
In more recent years, Mr. McDonough had been employed as a chef at a Meadville
restaurant. He also supervised the preparation of salad dressings, mayonnaise,
and other foods--many of them made from his own receipes--at the Baldwin
Laboratories of Saegerstown.
He was a memeber of St. Brigid's R.C.church.
Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Imogene , at home; three sons,
Horace, Jack and Joseph Jr. of Saegerstown; a sister, Mrs. mary Barbrie
of Pittsburgh; two brothers, Frank of Pittsburgh and John of Pasadena,
Calif; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Hunter Funeral Home, Saegerstwon, where rosary
devotions will be held at 8 o'clock Saturday night. Services will be held
at 2;30pm, Sunday at the funeral home with interment following at Saegertown
Cemetery.
