The IGI shows the children of Phila ALEXANDER and Elma Dorus BUNTING
(married i JAN 1885) as Myrtle, Elma Ross, Mildred, Dorus Ray and one
other living child. However, it shows their last name as SMITH.

The IGI shows John COBURN (son of Easick COBURN and Phoebe SMITH) and
Matida HAWTHORNE (married 5 NOV 1877) with children as Ray Harvey, Edna,
Anna, Maggie and Ardell with last names of SMITH.

Can anyone help clarify these above situations as to why the last names
show as SMITH?
