Tami:
If you are looking for locations of real estate, I'd suggest you consult the
1876 atlas of Crawford Co., which has township maps, with individual owners'
names on it.
The Crawford Co. Historical Society [open MTThF 1-5, and Sat. 10-2] has a
copy. They also have newspaper marriage and obituary notice indices, family
history files, etc. They have oil boom history, BUT I don't know of anyone
who would have information about specific employees of specific companies,
if that's what you'd be looking for. The Derrick's Handbook of Petroleum,
published in 1899, and J. J. McLaurin's Sketches in Crude Oil, published in
several editions around 1900 are gossipy and include information about those
other than the ones at the top. I imagine you could find either book in a
library close to you. The Venango Co. Historical Society in Franklin, the
Oil City Heritage Society in Oil City, and the Drake Well Museum library in
Titusville also have lots of information about oil history.
You probably should consult the 1879 Crawford Co. Directory [reprinted in
1998 and available in many libraries] the 1885 Crawford Co. History
[reprinted in 1975 and being reprinted again right now by the CCHS] and the
1899 Crawford Co. History [reprinted in 1985.] The 1876 atlas was also
reprinted by CCHS about 1980, and they still have copies for sale, if you
decide you'd like your personal copy.]
