So what's a RootsWeb, anyway?
The RootsWeb project has two missions:
To make large volumes of data available to the online
genealogical community at minimal cost.
To provide support services to online genealogical
activities such as USENET newsgroup moderation, mailing list
maintenance, surname list generation, etc.
RootsWeb's own genealogy runs back more than a decade to the
days of net.roots. RootsWeb folks have been involved since
the early days of ROOTS-L and the RootsWeb Surname List, and
more recently were among the founders of the RAND Genealogy
Club. We created the RootsWeb site to continue to support
the genealogical community as the needs of the community
outstripped the ability of RAND and other organizations to
host the genealogical community on a guest basis.

RootsWeb Search Engines
RootsWeb is really about search engines -- databases and
software married together to let you search for records
online. You'll find we already have enhanced search engines
for the 568,617-name RootsWeb Surname List and the Roots
Location List. As resources allow, we'll be bringing more
databases like the Social Security Death Index, census
extracts, and county history indices online.
Guest Home Pages
RootsWeb freely provides space on our servers for 3,395
homepages of genealogical and historical societies and to
groups such as US GenWeb. The Olive Tree Genealogy Homepage,
with its ship lists and other resources, was one of the
first to join us at RootsWeb. Who else is here? Pay a visit
to our guests page to find out.
We would like to freely provide space to individuals, but we
aren't sure at this point whether we'll have the resources
to handle that activity.
Comprehensive Links to Other Online Data Sources
The links on these RootsWeb pages point to actual
information and data sources, and not just to other Web
pages that just point to yet other Web pages.

Downloadable Files
This area contains more than 1200 megabytes of files that
are available over the Web by FTP transfer or by the archive
function of the mailing list software.

User Mailing Lists
We've installed the SmartList mailing list manager, which
enables us to support user lists with 10 to 1,000,000
subscribers. RootsWeb currently hosts more than 4,913
mailing lists. If you're a RootsWeb sponsor and would like a
mailing list for your genealogical society, family
association, or whatever (and if you or another volunteer
are willing to handle the not-too-difficult chores of being
a listowner), there is a Mail List Request Form to assist
you.
Contributor Services
While all of RootsWeb's databases, mailing lists, and other
activities are open to the public, selected services that
are conveniences (like automatic notification when your
surnames appear in new material uploaded to RootsWeb) are
available only to Contributors and Sponsors. Some services
that are expensive to provide (like personal Web space or
Web serving of personal GEDCOM files) are available at a
nominal extra cost to Sponsors.
Webmasters and Listowners
If you are the Webmaster of a site hosted at RootsWeb or
Listowner of a mailing list served from RootsWeb, you'll
find FAQs and other useful things by following this link.
Please Give Us Feedback!
Comments, suggestions, and especially bug reports are more
than welcome -- just send them to RootsWeb HelpDesk. Please
be patient if it takes us a bit to respond, though, because
we're all hacking away at the RootsWeb search engines and
registries.
