Dear Cindi,
There is no Jacob Wertz but Fred Wertz is mentioned in "My Life and Dream (by)
Robert E. Woodside Millersburg, Pennsylvania", 1979. The Chapter is titled
"Dickinson and Phi Kappa Sigma." Robert went to Dickinson College in Carlisle
and chose Phi Kappa Sigma as a fraternity.
On page 90:
"The fraternity was an instrument of education and an important one - I think
perhaps the most important part of my education.
From those in the fraternity while I was there, two became Methodist bishops
- John Wesley Lord (how could he miss with that name!) and Vernon Middleton.
Forr became college presidents - Howard L. Rubendall, president of Dickinson
College, Charles Swope of West Chester State College, James Read of Wilmington
College (Ohio) and Jack McConnel of Hamilton. (There was another bishop, Fred
Wertz, and two more college presidents, Wertz and Kerstetter, from the
fraternity in the six or seven years after I left law school.) Bob Chilton, Bob
Stewart, Randy Leopold and others became successful businessmen. At least five
brothers became outstanding physicians and surgeons. Many became successful
lawyers and teachers, several of them college professors. Paul (Irish) Walker,
a most loyal Dickinsonia, Phi Kap and Raven's Claw member and a dear friend of
mine since the twenties when we were fellow reporters for the Harrisburg
Telegraph, has been a popular columnist for Harrisburg newspapers for a half
century. Somebody must have been doing something right to attract and develop
that talent!"
Sorry there wasn't more,
