Daniel SHIFFER (spelling sometimes Sheffer, Schiffer, Schiffler, Sheiffer, Shaffer, etc.) married Sarah ELLIOTT on Feb. 9, 1796 in Dauphin County, PA. The Rev. John Airly or Arley performed the ceremony.
The Dauphin Tax records indicate Daniel SHIFFER living in Port Royal (there is also listed a John Sheffer in the same twp.) The 1800 census places Daniel, his wife, and two small daughters in Derry twp. He sold a cow and stove to Christian BEAR on April 10, 1801, Derry Twp. and is listed, but then crossed out and listed as removed, 1802, Derry twp.
Two daughters and one son were born to Daniel and Sarah during this time. Esther was born Feb. 16, 1797 possibly in Hummestown or Port Royal. Mary was born Aug. 28, 1799, probably in Port Royal. John was born Dec. 18, 1801, most likely in Derry Twp., and died in infancy.
By Dec. 3, 1803, Daniel and Sarah were living in Mifflinsburg, Northumberland Co., PA. A daughter, Sarah, was christened Sarah Sheiffer on Dec. 4, 1803 at S. Elias Lutheran Church in Mifflinsburg, PA. Sometime after that Daniel and family had settled in E. Buffalo twp., Northumberland County. Sons George Elliott (christened Johann George Schiffler on Feb. 6, 1806) and Daniel (christened Aug. 6, 1808 as Daniel Shiffer) were both christened at Dreisbach's Lutheran Reformed church, Buffalo Valley. Thus, it can probably be safely assumed that the first three children were also christened at an early Lutheran church in Dauphin County.
Five more children were born to the couple in the E. Buffalo area where they remained until about 1835, when they moved to Shippenville (Elk Twp.), Venango County (later Clarion Co.), PA. Sometime between 1840 and 1850 Daniel and Sarah had moved to Ferguson, Centre County, PA where Daniel Shiffer, a veteran of the War of 1812 who served from Union County, died in 1851 (Pine Grove Mills).
Listed in Londonderry, Port Royal, Hummelstown, and then Derry Twp. between 1792 and 1796, was an Archibald ELLIOTT. Another Elliott, James ELLIOTT, is listed in Harrisburg in 1790. Archibald ELLIOT and a William ELIOT are listed in "other townships" in 1790 as well. Another Elliott, Daniel ELLIOTT, lived in Derry twp. in 1785 and died in St. Clair, Allegheny Co., PA sometime between 1796 and 1799, leaving 3 sons John, William and West and a daughter, Mary.
Does anyone know of any connection between Daniel, James, Archibald, William, and my ancestor Sarah ELLIOTT?
I am trying to find the parents of both Daniel SHIFFER and Sarah ELLIOTT. Daniel was born Jan. 21, 1772, Sarah was born Jan. 18, 1779.
Trying to find any records (christening records for the eldest children, a burial record for John Shiffer), possible probate records mentioning either Daniel or Sarah, or any genealogies in the Dauphin County area for that time period that may mention them.
