Out here in the suburbs of Portland OR,
my cable internet access company is AT&T@ Home.com.
(formerly TCI)
My cable TV access is AT&T Broadband. (formerly TCI)
My Telephone company is Verizon (formerly GTE)
My Cell phone company is Verizon Wireless
Remember when AT&T was cosidered a monopoly
that had to be broken up? So, what do we now call a
company that has many connections to many of its own
companies, not a monopoly? <grin>
We do not have to have pay for cable TV in order to
use Cable internet access. The TCI/AT&t@Home.com
installed the cable modem free. They own it. If we move,
we leave the modem here and let the company remove it.
If we move, provided we move into another area that has
digital cable lines, the company will probably install a new
connection from their cable line into our house or
apartment for free.
Cable modem is fast. The montly fee here is $42.05 a month,
on a credit card, not a monthly bill. We can leave the
connection on 24 hours a day/night. Sometimes the service
slows down but not a lot. It has been suggested that the
reason my computer freezes sometimes is because I am trying to
navigate on the web or with my email during heavy use times.
It has been suggested that the reason I sometimes get a
message "cannot be found" is because too many people are
trying to get to the same website at the same time. Sometimes
the entire area is down. Sometimes an accident causes cable
outages in a widespread area. Sometimes one or more of the
company servers will decide to die.
So what else is new? Even with these occasional problems,
I wouldn't give up my cable modem for anything. My firstborn
son is now 40 years old. I would almost but not quite give him
away if I had to to keep my cable modem. <grin>
