Hello List,
Another question please - I have ancestors that were married by Dr. J.L.
Forwood, Mayor of Chester, in 1877. What would be the reason why they were
married by the Mayor? Did families have to know the Mayor personally and did
Dr. Forwood maintain marriage records? Are they available at DCHS?

Its a common practice to be married by the mayor if they had no religous
affiliation, I was married by our mayor in 1991 then went on to have a big
church wedding at a later date. No people didnt have to know the Mayor most
Mayors will do it gladly I cant even remember how much we paid but it wasnt
alot. As for the records that I cant help you with, I am going on Tuesday to
the DCHS I can ask if you like.
