I have been reading the list digest for a few years, but have not posted
because I was unsure of where to start.
My surest Chester Co. line begins with William WINCHESTER, born 1760,
possibly in Ireland. He was naturalized in West Chester on 9 Aug 1808, died
in 1848, and is buried in Nottingham Presbyterian Cemetery. I have copies of
both his naturalization papers and will. His wife was named Sarah, and they
had two children, John and Margaret, and possibly a third, William (a person
by this name appears in census records). Margaret married Robert ROWLAND,
and they were the chief beneficiaries of William's will.
John was born in 1797, probably also in Ireland. He died on 16 Sep 1859 and
is also buried in Nottingham. His wife's name was Wilhelmina. Winchester's
living in the Oxford area say her maiden name was FITZGERALD. They had nine
children, including my g-grandfather, Nathaniel Patterson WINCHESTER, born in
1834. There was a farmer in East Nottingham named Nathaniel PATTERSON, who
left a $40 to my g-grandfather in his will. I don't know of any family ties,
however. I would be very interested in any information on either FITZGERALD
or PATTERSON connections.
Patterson WINCHESTER moved from the Oxford area to E. Lower Merion Twp,
Montgomery Co, between 1860 and 1880. He died in Manayunk, Philadelphia in
1885. His wife's name was Mary. They had nine children, including my
grandmother, Mary Ellen, born in 1874, who married Amos Henry GREENE. I
would like to know the identity of Patterson's wife Mary.
Another line begins with an 1850 census record for Nehemiah FORD in New
Garden Twp, Chester Co. His wife's name was Martha. In 1850 there was
another Nehemiah FORD residing in East Nantmeal Twp. I assume there is a
relationship. By the time of the Civil War, his family was in the area of
Chester, Delaware Co, where he enlisted. He is recorded as serving in
several units during the war. He was killed by a train on 13 October 1889,
and is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery. I would like to know more about Martha,
and his connection with other FORD's in the area. His daughter Sarah
(Sallie), born in May 1856, was my g-grandmother. She married Nathaniel
GREEN(E), and was the mother of Amos GREENE, who married Mary WINCHESTER.
Nathaniel GREENE was born in PA in about 1851. His death certificate gives
his father's name as John. I have not been able to locate this family prior
to the 1880 census, where they were living in Aston Twp, Delaware Co. I am
fairly certain they were in southeastern PA for several generations prior to
this. This remains my major brick wall.
I would greatly appreciate help with any of there loose ends.
