Dear Group,

We've been so quiet lately but I chalk it up to either a hammock in the
back yard that is too tempting or a cemetery that cries out to be
explored--or some such summer doings. So I guess I'll just have to
unveil a series of stories that I fell "heir" to. They were written by
H. A. Harter in the original Penna-Dutch dialect and were published in
the Keystone Gazette, Bellefonte, PA, between 1894 and 1904.

They were transcribed by Bob James who lives near Anchorage, Alaska. He
was originally from the Bellefonte area and grew up in a valley that was
100% Penna-Dutch. He speaks the dialect fluently. He graciously
allowed me to post his translations to the list and hopes they will add
some insight into our Penna-Dutch ancestors' everyday lives.

I will number each story so that you will be aware of any that you
happened to miss. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Vee
