There's something about ladie's crocheting, isn't there? My grandmother used
to crochet all kinds of things. When I was young, and had only 2 sisters (I
have 6 now), she crocheted blankets for us girls. They were big enough to
fit on our single sized beds, and were multi-colored, with holly-hobby type
dolls crocheted into the design. I'm pretty sure mine is still around
somewhere. She taught me one of the simple stitches when I was about 6 or 7,
and I made a shirt for my doll that I was very proud of.
This year, I got the bright idea to crochet a blanket for my son. I decided
to do this to save money by making a gift, instead of buying one. I also
wanted him to have something that I handmade that will, hopefully, last for
many years.
Well - it didn't end up saving me money - I had to buy about 8 spools of
yarn, the book w/ the pattern I wanted to do, and an instruction book, (since
I haven't crocheted since I was 7), and all the hooks, etc. The really sad
part is that I have been working on this blanket for 2 months now, and am
only about 1/4 done, so there's no chance of my son getting it for Christmas!
At least now I'll have the skill, and it makes me feel closer to my grandma
somehow, even though she's 1/2 way across the country from me. Maybe I'll
have it done by next Christmas! :)
