Our squirrels are quite acrobatic as well! In fact, we had to take down our birdfeeders this summer because the squirrels were getting into them. Now the finches are knocking on the windows wondering where their feeders are. :-)
We had this one squirrel who looked like he had the "mange" for he was loosing his hair and his tail was hairless, too.
When we were in Illinois, we saw some gray squirrels in Galena near U. S. Grant's home. We also have some black squirrels in Northern Indiana along with your usual brown ones. I think the black ones are native to Canada. I could be wrong on that.

Glad to know I am not the only "nut" to feed the squirrels. Here in TX they
fight with the crows over the large pots of peanut and corn that I put out.
Then at night the raccoons take their turn (I have a mother with 3 babies and
the littlest is Dennis the Menace. She is always barking at him to get him
back in line. Our band march will probably look like that - LOL:). Then I
have one squirrel who hangs upside down from the tree branch and eats of the
block of seed for the birds! I have named him Snitch.
