<< In the recent exchanges about Penna. Dutch studies there was a statement
which concerned me. The writer stated "an estimated 50,000 people left the
Palatinate region ............ on their way to the USA .... namely Lancaster
Co., PA in the 18th century. As a Pennsylvania Dutchman who lives in
Lancaster Co., but born in Montgomery Co., I must say that some of the 50,000
came to Lancaster Co., but most went to other counties in SE and central
Pennsylvania. I know that most readers understand this, but I was concerned
that some people might be mislead. >>
Was that me?
This information comes from Historic Background and Annal of the Swiss &
German Pioneer Settlers of Southeastern Pennsylvania by H Frank Eshleman;
copyright 1917; A Facsimile Reprint Published 1998 by Heritage Books, Inc;
1540E Pointer Ridge Place; Bowie MD 20716; 1-800-398-7709;
www.heritagebooks.com; ISBN 0-7884-1012-1
The point was that only about 65% of the people that left the Palatinate
region actually arrived in PA--primarily, but not exclusively, Lancaster.
The travel conditions were notoriously awful, described in several places in
this book.
This book covers "the European Background--The Causes Which Forced the Swiss
Into Pennsylvania" on pg 2..."1009--Earliest Authentic Appearance of the
Herrs"...the early religious struggles, persecution & general suffering to
inspire the modern movie producer...migration, emmigration,
immigration...ever onward to p.355, "1782--The German-Swiss Disregard the
Prohibiting of Trade With Great Britain".
Why the extra attention to Lancaster? You decide: By H. Frank Eshleman,

Historical Society; member of the Historical Society of PA at Phila; and
Member of the PA History Club of Philadelphia. c 1917 Lancaster, PA
