I recently read an article about the Mollies, in American History
Magazine. (aug 1999)
Was ondering if anyone has more information about them, they were Irish
American
and were members of the A.O.H. Ancient order of Hiberians, not all AOH
members
were Mollies, but all the Mollies who were tried and convicted of
murder and for killing
police officers, railroad people, and most of all Mine Owners and
bosses.
In the article it lists a few of the names of people who were killed
or tried.
Big Pat Dormer a mollie
Jack Kehoe a mollie
Muff Lawler - saloon owner and mollie
James Roarity - Mollie (implicated in death of a police officer was
hanged in Pottsville
June 21, 1877)
Hugh McGehan - Mollie tried for the killing of Yost
James Boyle - Mollie tried for killing Yost
Benjamin Yost - Police officer killed by the Mollies
James Carroll - tavern owner Mollie
Michael J. Doyle & Edward Kelly - Mollies who were commissioned to gun
down
Welsh mine superintendant John P. Jones (he was accused of blacklisting
miners who had taken part of a strike) he was shot in the back.
Thomas Sanger a foreman, and William Uren mine worker gunned down
Charles O'Donnell killed by a group of masked men (he was a Mollie, but
was believed
to have been involved w/ the deaths of Sanger and Uren)
pregnant wife of Charles McAllister shot, but survived, in the
confusion his mother-in-law
was also pistol whipped. (said to have been done by irate valley
resisdents trained
by Captain Robert Linden of the Coal & Iron Police.
The article goes into more details about this was found in the History
of Pinkertons
Detective Agency, who was hired by the Railroad to investigate the
Mollies.
