Subject: [PAF-2.31-USERS] PAF conversion and PAF 4

Hi Sandy,
Yes you can obtain PAF 4 still. Just go to
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
then click on ORDER/DOWNLOAD PRODUCTS>SOFTWARE DOWNLOADS-FREE and then
scroll right down the page that comes up until you see "Personal Ancestral
FileĀ® 4.0.4 - Multi Language (5.75 MB)" (last item). You will find that
there is a separate SOURCE section in the newer versions of PAF, so all your
Sources in your PAF 2.31 Notes will stay in NOTES when you transfer. Then if
you wish, you can create Sources for them (most of mine are still in Notes
due to huge number to retype!). A good tip is to not convert your data to
the new PAF. Create copies for the new program to convert and place them in
another directory. That way if you encounter any problems, you can always go
back to the original data.

Your printer problem could be related to the PAF 2.31 not recognising your
modern printer. If I remember correctly you have to select a printer when
setting up PAF 2.31. Did you manage to find the printer you are currently
using? I had a problem here in Australia with it I remember, as not only
could I not find the dot matrix printer (a National Panasonic) I used then,
but here in Australia we have different sized paper, too. I got around the
problem by selecting one of the Epson printers I think, but at odd times I
used to get reports running over the perforations on continuous paper used
in the dot matrix.

Lance in Australia - and a Merry Christmas, too!

For those interested in the new version 5 of PAF, there is now a new list on
Roots Web for the exchange of views. Subscribe to the List version at
mailto: or the Digest version by
mailto: with only the word "subscribe"
(without the quotes) as the message.

Thank you Lee & Shirley for your reply. Neither of you mentioned if you have
had the printing problem that I am having, or heard of anyone who has/is
having such a problem. This thing is driving me crazy. Maybe I have always
had the problem when I first started four years ago and just never realized
it because all my descendancy charts were one or two pages, but after four
years of reaseach most of my charts are four to six pages long now. Lee,
you
said you have 4.0 and 2.31, does that mean when you upgrade you have the
option of copying the data from one to the other as well as a total
transfer?
Also, were the upgrades from 2.32 to 4.0, or was ther a 3 something along
the
way? If so, to upgradt to 5 do I need to put 4.0 in first and then 5?
