Oh ... I just didn't put it together that way, I guess. Just as
everyone doesn't always "see" the logic in other abbreviations ...
I always like to keep up with new happenings -- I will
definitely mark down the change of Newfoundland & Labrador!
(As I noted, my reference was a bit out-dated ... from college)
And I also happen to agree about spelling out place names in
the course of recording Genealogy. But, when I have to put
down the same place name over and over for the same person,
would it be okay to abbrev. on subsequent entries? (Although
I can see that it might cause confusion when printing reports on
who all were located in the same place.)
Thanks, again ... :-) Jeannie.Fleck

| Jeannie, thanks for the listing.
| Always nice to have a list of abbreviations handy for reference,
| although I have to agree that in genealogical work, spelling out
| the full name of the geopolitical division is the best insurance for
| long term accuracy as a reference material.
| I don't know whether it was ever "official" or not, but I recall
| (from my own experience and youth!) that in common usage my
| state, MAINE, used to be abbreviated by many as Ma. at a time
| when presumably MA was abbreviated Mass.! Styles, techniques,
| and "common knowledge" all change over time!
| And PQ stands for Province of Quebec or so I always assumed.
| Also I believe that the recently renamed province of
| "Newfoundland and Labrador" is now abbreviated as NL!
