If your mail has the wrong zip code it may be picked up but in machine
sorting that is very unusual. It will end up at the zip code used and be
re-routed back to the correct zip code. If it has no zip code at all it
is rejected by the electronic sorting machines and is manually handled.
This slows the delivery of your mail, but in most cases it will be
re-routed to the correct address. Australia Post uses a similar system.
I may be wrong, but I believe the Canadian postal service returns such
mail to the sender.
Incidentally, a handy list of State and Street abbreviations (up to
date) is available on the USPService web site:
http://www.usps.com/ncsc/lookups/usps_abbreviations.html
Or if you want to be sure you are using the correct zip code, you can do
a look up at:

But if, as you mention, the post office relies only on the zip codes,
how does my letter get to me if someone puts the incorrect zip --
or none at all. This has happened ... the mail is delayed, but it
eventually gets here by what city & state are written on the
envelope. (Conversely, my mail has "gotten thru" when someone
had the correct zip & incorrect state {written out, not abbrev.}.)
Thanks for letting me express my thoughts ...

| I checked with the US Post Office. They do not use the state
| abbreviations. They rely solely on the ZIP codes.
