Subject: [PAF-5] PAF gedcom compatible with FTM?

I'm trying to share data with a friend who uses Family Tree Maker on his 2
computers (Windows 98 and Windows 3.11). I sent him a gedcom created from
PAF 5.2.18.0 that included over 9,000 individuals and a great deal of text
info in the notes, as well as huge numbers of source notes.

His report on ability to import the gedcom:
sidwell.ged will not open FTM v4.0A Win3.11 (message: This file exists and
is read-only. Use a different filename) but will open FTM v10 Win98
(message: There were 9,103 warnings and errors generated during import.)

He is doing a huge favor for me by checking my files for data he can fill
in from records in his county. I had sent him files about 2 years ago, and
this is the updated version that includes what he sent previously and what
others sent to me. I also sent him an HTML file generated by PAF, as my
computer balked at producing a PDF or RTF of this database (it crashed
after supposedly generating 50,000 and some odd pages -- for both formats).

Maybe the gedcom on his FTM version 10 will work out, but I worry about all
of those errors. Is there another format of gedcom that PAF will produce
that might be more compatible with FTM? Will he be able to utilize the file
with all of the errors as it stands right now?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Ellen

Hi Ellen and all,

I bought and used FamilyTree Maker for Windows version 4 many years ago before PAF had the capability to do Multimedia. I loved it for many reasons but importing Gedcoms was NOT one of the things it did flawlessly. When i finally got my data from PAF3 into FTM, it showed an error for every person that had the Surname in UPPER CASE. This may be the reason for some of the errors your friend is getting. If your database has names entered that way, PAF5 can easily and quickly redo all the names for you.

To standardize you database, in PAF5 click Tools and select Change Names to Mixed Case. Now you can make a new Gedcom and send to your friend. This should give you less errors when a gedcom is imported to another application like FTM.

Then, if you want to see your surnames in CAPS in PAF, go to Tools, select Preferences and click the Names tab and select Capitalize surnames on screens and reports. Hope this helps somebody.
