What has not been addressed is when a surname is legally changed. My father
was born in Hungary and soon after arrival in America as a young boy, his
father used an alternate spelling for their surname, which was common at the
time. Later, when my father was naturalized, he actually had his surname legally
changed to something close to the commonly used USA spelling but slightly
different. In all cases here, the different spellings were intentional and not a
result on not being able to read and/or write. Again, this presents a
problem of which surname to use, especially with three intentionally different
spellings among his siblings.
