Trudy,
PAF is definitely not the only genealogy database program around, in fact it
is not even the only one on my computer. But after years of using PAF
intensively, I keep finding new things that it can do, and learning better
ways of doing old things. I am not sure how someone who hasn't used PAF
since the early version of PAF 3 can say what PAF 5 (and its add-ons) can
and cannot do. I guess the important question is "Which software helps you
to work most efficiently and accomplish the tasks that you personally find
most important?" My answer is "PAF", but whatever your answer is, good for
you.
Probably no one knows everything about all the various programs. For
example, one of my favorite podcasts keeps talking about how much superior
Legacy is to PAF, largely because of Legacy's "intelli-merge numbers" that
make it easy to re-merge data after updates by various members of a large
research team. Guess what! PAF calls them "unique record serial numbers" but
they are really the same thing. Perhaps a slight difference in terminology
leaves a false impression. The feature was there all the time, but
undiscovered and unused.
The commercial version of Legacy has some nice features, as does RootsMagic,
Ancestral Quest, etc. Maybe the new version of Family Tree Maker will be
better yet, if and when they finally finish developing it. :-)
But for now, PAF helps me do what I need to do in an efficient way. If I
need to use some feature that is missing from PAF, the good people at the
Family History Center can help me to use some other program that has the
missing feature. Expanding the abbreviated names of states and provinces is
one idea that comes to mind, or verifiying the existence of a geographical
entity at the time of an event. Maps and time-lines are also outside the
scope of PAF 5, and can be generated by some other programs.
