The following was in my copy of " History of New Geneva and
Vicinity"--William Nicholson of Berwick on Tweed, England emigrated
to America- When?
His son- Joseph m. Hannah Smith-Scott , they were from Chestertown,
Maryland. They had Commodore James Nicholson b. 1737. He m. Frances
Witter on May 1, 1763 and lived in Greenwich Village, N.Y.C. Frances
was the daughter of Thomas Witter 1713-1786 and Mary Lewis 1721-1745.
It looks like the Witters were from Spanish Point, Island of Bermuda.
James went to Oxford University and was in the British Navy. He
lived in NYC from 1763-1771 then went to Maryland. Was made Capt. of
the American ship-Defense. He evidently was made commander-in-chief
of the American Navy in January 1777. A position he held until an
end of the war.
James and Hannah Nicholson's children-
Catherine, Hannah ( w. of Albert Gallatin) , Frances, James Witter,
Maria, Thomas and Jehoradden.
James Witter Nicholson b. Sept. 2, 1773 NYC. relocated to Fayette
Co. with brother-in-law Albert Gallatin. James m. Ann Griffin of
Fayette co., Their children were - James, Thomas Witter, Mary A.,
Frances and Maria.
The township of Nicholson was named for him. He died Oct. 6, 1851
