Subject: Red Lion / Red Line - Do you recall?

Hello,
Some of you may recall that back in the Winter, there was a question
about the origin of the name Red Lion or Red Line. While looking for
something else in Ellis, I found the following on p. 811:

"In 1810 . . . . settled near the Red Lion, in Jefferson township, a
noted tavern in its day, the fame of which penetrated even into
far-off New England."

Back in the early 1800's the taverns might have been among the largest
establishments of note in Fayette County. We did not see any today in
the list posted for us by Ed Dunlevy but perhaps other places derived
their names from taverns, too.

Regards,
Jane
