Subject: VIRGINIA LAND WARRANTS IN FAYETTE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA
Date: Tue, 01 Dec 1998 08:38:52 PST

To the List and Jane M. Walsh:

Thank you Jane for posting the synopsis by Denise Mortorff from "The
Monongahela of Old, etc." by Veech and for your questions to the list on
locating information on very early land records. I have been off the
list for a couple of weeks and don't know if anyone has addressed this
question. On the chance that it hasn't, I would like to offer some
information that might be of assistance to someone on the list.

Many libraries around the country, and Denver is among them, have the
survey maps from the Horn Papers. For those not familiar with this
resource, the maps are the only part of the Horn Papers considered to be
valid and reliable. This third book is entirely composed of copies of
original survey maps for Washington, Fayette and Green Counties, PA.
The maps are broken down by township and give the name of the original
owner, the number of acres plus the date of warrant and patent and if
sold, the name of the purchaser. In many cases it shows that the land
was originally awarded for service in the Revolution from Virginia.

Perhaps this might be a beginning for those looking for military
warrants for their Fayette ancestors. There is an index for all the
original purchasers.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Schmidt
Denver
