Subject: Re: VIRGINIA LAND WARRANTS IN FAYETTE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA
Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 17:02:07 EST
Hi List- I saw this note about land warrants and had to relate my experience
this summer. I spent a couple of days in Uniontown and one full day in the
courthouse. I found warrants/surveys listed for my KERN and EICHER lines. Upon
asking one of the nice resource folks where to find same, I was pointed to a
bunch of ancient looking metal file containers, alphabetized, and perched
tantalizingly out of reach on top of other files.
A rickety wooden ladder is provided for your "convenience". Well, I am not
only short but fairly round so this was precarious at best. I tottered up to
the K's but couldn't reach the E's and didn't have the heart to force someone
else not related closely to me up those rickety steps.
But what a find- there were the original handcopied surveys from 1789 and
1793 and the warrants for land owned by my William KERN!! I was overwhelmed by
the connection I felt holding those fragile documents with the man long gone,
who also had held them.
Believe me when I tell you that next trip I will force my taller, lean son
up those rickety steps to reach the E bin for my EICHER kin!!
